Max Speed For MacBook Pro 130mb/s??
« on: November 16, 2008, 01:29:41 PM »

Hey everyone, I just got a new MacBook Pro, and bought the DIR-655 thinking I'd be able to reach 300mb/s, however I can't get it higher than 130. Anyone know if this is the max for the MacBook Pro? Is it a D-Link issue or Apple issue?
Thanks!

It's an Apple issue, because of the integrated Bluetooth.  Wireless N can cause it to overlap and cause lots of interference.  So, that's why it's no longer able to do 270/300 Mbps.

Chipset doesn't matter...

You can however hit 300 Mbps if you were on the 5 GHz range and using the 40Hz channel width.

isnt it a intel chipset, then it might be limted to 20mhz bandwith, due to the intel wireless chip not supporting 40mhz

yeah not sure what wireless chipset it is. its an intel processor though if that's what you meant.
and as for the 5ghz range, this router doesn't support that correct?
i've tried setting it to using the 40hz channel width only and couldn't get the 270/300 mbps, which i'm assuming was just because i can't set it to 5ghz range.
maybe apple will somehow come out with a fix for this... i don't even use bluetooth.

It does actually. Some Intel wireless chipsets only use the 20 Mhz band by design and are thus limited to ....130 Mbps. So even if they patch the supposed Bluetooth overlap (I'm not a Mac-ie), the wireless chip can be the decising factor. Hence the question.

You guys are very confused when it comes to the Apple adapters.

They EITHER use Aetheros or Broadcom.  The latter being most common among the ones built in 2008 and up.

Secondly, why would they be using an Intel adapter?  Yes, we all know those are limited, but the chipset doesn't matter as long as you can take advantage of that 40Hz channel width, which I explained already.
The only Intel thing in those computers is the CPU.  Not even the mainboard chipset is Intel.  It's Nvidia.

Your MBP, if you just got it uses Broadcom.  It's something under the Apple OS which prevents that from running at the higher speeds.  Bootcamp and XP work fine, and as intended.  Forcing it to the 5GHz range, and attaining the 40Hz will get those speeds.  Nothing more, nothing less.

You can set your router to force the 40Hz all you want, but it's the Apple OS which blocks it on the 2.4GHz band.

I suggest you do some research and find out for yourself.

There are no planned patches for this as it's been brought up to PM at Apple.

in order to achieve 300Mbps, you are required to use WPA2 AES cipher. also, 300Mbps is attained in a VERY reasonable environment at a fairly close range. I'd say less than 30ft.

Don't use that as a rule of thumb though, everyone's environment is different.

I'd blame the intel adapter thats probably in that Mac for not being HT40 compliant. See if you can locate the model of the adapter.

That's just the thing though..it's not an Intel adapter, but a Broadcom.  And under Apple OS, because of the integrated bluetooth connectivity, it is restricted to nothing more than 20Hz.

There you go. Thats it then. It's only capable of 130.
