Xbox functionality? **Opinion needed on new NAS**
« on: November 16, 2008, 02:20:06 PM »

I've got to be missing something, after applying the new firmware I'm able to see the DNS321 from my xbox360 as a source and browse it. But when I actually try to play something (music or video) the item gets a red x or the video says that media sharing software isn't running. I'd love to use this I just can't get it to work.

Any help would be appreciated!

Is no one else having an issue?

I have the xbox 360 hardwired and it's able to sign into xbox live so I'm assuming there's no networking issues.

After the song that I'm trying to play gets a red X I click on it and it says that it may be an unsupported file, which is not true as I can change the source back to my server and play the same song.

Well, looks like this thing is going back. The whole reason I got this was to replace my windows server and if it won't stream media to my xbox this it's half useless.

I can't get it to stream properly to the xBox 360 either.  I am using Windows Media Player 11 as a UPnP server and it works flawlessly.  I won't use the DNS-321 UPnP right now and maybe never if it doesn't work any better than this.  I'll just use WMP 11.  I am currently using the NAS for backups, my media collection, and as an FTP file server.  All of this works properly with the exception of file permissions in V 1.01.  They have a tendency to disappear when the NAS is restarted.  If D-link will post the distribution firmware, I'll roll back to V 1.00 and use that.  For what I want, that will work fine.  I am giving up on UPnP.

It looks like this product was brought out way too fast - before it was really ready.  I honestly am getting quite frustrated myself with really nice hardware that won't work because of weak and faulty firmware and manufacturers that sell a product with problems and then do not update it any further.  The best thing D-link could do is to put the source out for open source and the problems would be fixed in a real hurry.

Overall I really think this is a very nice product.  If D-link would just get these problems fixed, it would be a tremendous product.

Nice, edit out my question about another product. You've got time to do that but no Dlink person has time to answer my question. And you of all people the "Technical Engineer Global Moderator" (lycan). You just made my mind up on where this useless dns321 is going.

BTW- Linksys apparently makes some quality NAS products that stream to the Xbox 360

I haven't had a problem since applying the firmware update.  Everything streams fine, so I don't know what could possibly be causing your problem. Sorry bud.

Sorry you have not had any luck with getting your Xbox 360 working. I assume you have already reset the unit to defaults and after turning on the UPNP AV server did you click the REFRESH button? If not and the unit has not made it to the dumpster(ebay) yet then I would advise doing so.

Hasn't made it back to bestbuy yet, haven't had the time to go. So you're saying that I should reset it to defaults? I've already hit the refresh button and let it do it's thing.

Well if you have time to give it another go I would definitely advise doing a reset to defaults and start the server again with a new refresh. When you refresh the UPNP AV server does it make it all the way to 100%? Does it time out?

Also can you play media from..say Windows Media Player 11? I just want to make sure the XboX is up to date. I was unable to play media from my DNS-321 until I verified that it had received the OPTIONAL media update on the Xbox 360 console. Once that was installed I had no issues streaming music photos or videos.

Yeah, I can stream from my windows server running wmp11 just fine. Reset to default and still the same issue. It also get's to 100% on the refresh as well.

Are running as "Root" on the interface or have you selected a folder on your drive that your media content is located in?

Try selecting a folder containing your media and not the root. I have found that using the root is sometimes an issue if you have alot of files on your drives. Have you tried it after updating your Xbox Yesterday?

I put some more time into UPnP on the DNS-321 and here is what I've come up with.  Currently I'm just trying to stream music.
- Set DNS-321 to "Music" subfolder.  I have 383 albums in the collection.
- Did a Refresh.  It completed to 100%.
- Music streams correctly to the xBox 360 and to a Philips Media Player connected to a tube stereo amplifier.  The amplifier is a restored 1960s Harmon Kardon vintage tube stereo.  Playing CD music on this stereo produces a real sweet sound.
- The Music is organized on the DNS-321 into two Genres.  Most of the music is in "Other".  I also end up with a second Genre that is some of my Son's kid music.  I like to play my music by Genre so this isn't exactly what I'm looking for.
- The Music file folder has album art from WMP 11 organizing the music and adding album art files.  The DNS-321 puts the album art into "Photos".  This could be solved by removing all the album art.  Not necessarily a problem.

The real issue for me is that the DNS-321 isn't organizing my music by Genre.  Before I upgraded I had the same problem.  It may be that there is residue left from the previous firmware version or WMP 11 has messed with things so the DNS-321 can't understand Genre.  Has anyone else seen this in the organization of the music by Genre?  Is there a way to force the DNS-321 to re-organize the music from scratch and get the Genre correct?

I haven't tried this yet with the update just applied to the xBox 360, but the update appears to be only cosmetic.  I'll try it over the weekend.
