NEW MEMBER. PLEASE HELP
« on: November 18, 2008, 03:45:28 AM »

I just purchased my router 3 days ago. I am wondering can I use the usb adapter for my laptop. I currently have a macbook, and it does not have the card slot. Can the usb adapter be use for the Dir-655 router,or is it only used for the dual band router? Thanks

Hi New Member

The USB port can be used for three things:
1- Windows Connect Now
2- Attaching an external device (USB printer, USB HDD, USB stick)
3- using an USB 3G (mobile) device

Only for 1. you don't need any software to install. For use with the other options you need the SharePort software: ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Apps/SharePort_Network_USB_Utility_100.zip

BUT: there is no MAC version of the software. So with your MAC you cannot use the USB port.
Perhaps I misunderstood, but you cannot connect your laptop to it (at least nobody tries I think).

I am sorry, I think I worded it wrong. I mean can one use the DWA-160 adapter on a macbook if they do not have the dual band router.

I concur with the last poster.  There are no drivers, and in order to get the 300Mbps throughput of 802.11n, you need to have a Dlink Adapter.  If you are OK with lower speeds (around 130Mbps), then find another USB adapter that supports MAC.  I am not sure if Apple has release their 802.11n USB adapter, but this would also work.

I am not familiar with Macbooks, so I don't know if you can swap out the wifi card.  If it is possible, you can get an Atheros based wifi card and connect to the router with 300Mbps speeds.  You do not need to use D-Link cards to get 300Mbps.
