To go back a topic and a half, I feel compelled to add that if you lose any subset of drive(s) in a JBOD array you do NOT lose the data on the other drives.

It will be difficult to access that data, but it is possible to force the mount of a partial filesystem (what you would have on that disk) and recover anything physically written to that disk.  It may require some hanky maneuvers, maybe even a call to a data recovery house.  However the data did not disappear from the drive.
