Establishing connection (please wait) - forever!
« on: December 12, 2008, 08:56:31 PM »

Well, I've spent about three hours on this and finally gave up. I hope someone here can help...

I have had a fairly basic Verizon connection for the last couple of years (1.5MB DSL). About three weeks ago I started having problems and - after WAY too long trying to convince them (probably more than 4 hours on the phone) - they finally sent someone out. Sure enough, she found a problem with the wiring outside the house, fixed it and verified the connection was solid. She did this with my laptop being plugged directly into the DSL model (Westel 6100). So, I let her go once I had a good DSL connection. Big mistake...

I have had the same physical connection for a year or more, namely a DIR-655 plugged into the Westel modem as the primary wireless router in my house. I have also had a really creaky old MN700 chugging away serving some of my older equipment in the house over wireless.

I am now in a situation where if I plug the DIR-655 into the Westel I see a "Network Status: Establishing (please wait)" message. The DIR-655 never establishes a connection to the modem. By comparison, if I plug the MN700 into the modem it connects immediately and I can browse the web. So clearly I have good DSL connectivity (which I am using to enter this post). But if I switch back to the preferred configuration of the DIR-655 being plugged into modem I just see the Establishing message.

I have tried everything - cold reboots of the modem and the DIR-655 (in that order), different cables, etc. Absolutely nothing will get the job done. As I say, the MN700 works just fine but I prefer the DIR-655 to a 5+ year old wireless router! Especially since I have an Xtreme bridge on it's way via UPS right now!

Anyway, I'd love to hear if anyone has any ideas. I upgraded to the 1.21 firmware a few weeks ago and have been running with that successfully until today.

Thanks.

Try this first...

1.  In the WL700, see if you can find a control to release the DHCP setting.  If you cannot release the DHCP reservation, then disconnect the WL700 and power down the Westell leave the network disconnected for at least 2 hours (perhaps overnight if that's convenient).

2.  Then, remove power from the Westell.  With power also removed from the DIR-655, connect the ethernet cable from the Westell to the DIR-655 WAN port.

3.  Power up the Westell, wait 60-120 seconds

4.  Power up the DIR-655, wait 60 seconds

5. See if you still have the problem ...

If this helps, there are one or both of these factors that were likely involved-- the IP address that was assigned to your Verizon account was preventing an assignment of an IP to the DIR-655, so we released it; and/or the modem needed the power-off/on cycle to sync with the router (and perhaps detect its MAC address), very common to overlook this.

I believe this is a firmware issues for DIR series routers. But some of the DIR series router's though its firmware is updated and it already gone thru a proper power cycle but keeps on establishing.
