UPnP and PS3
« on: January 01, 2009, 02:25:56 PM »

From time to time I receive a message:  DLNA error protocol error (2114) has occurred.  When this happens I cannot navigate into that folder.

I've also had one heck of a time trying to get the PS3 to see certain files; I don't know if its my lack of understanding of what the PS3 can do or something the 323 isn't doing correctly.

For example:

Most of my music is in .mp4 (only mpeg-4 audio in mp4 container).  When I browse to any folder that only contains .mp4 music files (Music -> DNS-323 -> Music -> Folders -> Path to album), it's empty or doesn't expand.  Conversely, if I go to Video -> DNS-323 -> Video -> All videos, all of my mp4 music is categorized as video and will not play.

I've thought about playing around with it and renaming the .mp4 music to m4a to see what effect that might have.  Is that a wise choice?

Also noticed the PS3 doesn't recognize .divx as a playable format -- which is funny considering they have licensed the divx v6 codec.

Last of all, there are some folders with .avi (divx) which don't even show up.  For example I have movies categorized by folder according to what year they were released.  2007 shows up, but 2006-2000 are missing.  I can't explain this.  It shows up in windows explorer.

Is there a limit on either (or both) the PS3 or 323 for how many folders can be shared?  That would explain a whole lot.

Hi ttmcmurry ,

Have a look at this thread to see if it can provide some insight:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=2858.0

Most of UPnP devices have a file and path limits; could be possible that you're running up against any/all of the following:

- File path over 256 chars
- Non-standard chars in path or filenames
- File name over 42 chars

Let us know if you discover the issues as other PS3 users seem to be experiencing similar issues.

Cheers,

Hi all,

My problem with DNS-323's UPnP and PS3 is a bit more specific: why the PS3 is unable to show ID3 information from mp3 files present on the 323? It works perfectly when streaming from my PC/Notebook.

Cheers!

I've learned a few things in the time since I posted this.

From the PS3's perspective:

.mp4 = Video
.m4v = Video
.m4a = Audio

Even though technically the PS3 should be able to play *any* mp4 container lest it be .aac .mp4 .m4v or .m4a, it's set to use the file extension to determine what can be played instead of determing the content of the file.  I'm sure from a performance perspective this is faster-- though I find it odd my Sony Walkman plays and categorizes .mp4 files based on their content yet the PS3 with the Cell CPU merely handles extensions.  :)  Gripe, yes, but I'll get over it.

Now I only have a few thousand files to rename.  Ugh.

After renaming all of my .divx files to .avi, the problem of those files not showing up was fixed; again the PS3 will not scan a file to see what it is, it only uses the extension.

Hi ttmcmurry,

Thanks for sharing your findings ... I suspect the XBOX 360 will be victim to the same restrictions.

how can you tell if a file name be longer than 42 characters is a problem?

Also is there anyway to sort/search by file name length?
thanks

Easy.

Take a file, put it in a folder, rename it to something larger than 42 characters.  Then..
Take a second file, put it in the same folder, rename it to something less than 42 characters.  Then..

Test.  :)

Bon Appetit.
