VPN disconnects roughly every 3 minutes
« on: January 05, 2009, 12:54:48 PM »

I am using Windows Vista SP1 x64 to connect via a Vista built in PPTP VPN connection through an Ethernet DSL modem to an ISA 2004 servers. When I connect directly without the DIR-825 router it works fine and I can stay connected for days at a time. When I add the router I disconnect approximately every 3 minutes. I am using the DIR-825 and I tried the 1.00 firmware as well as 1.01 and have the same issue with both. I have tried wireless and even hard wired all with the same problem.

Is there some setting I can adjust on the router to make this work properly without disconnecting every few minutes?

Thank you in advance.

Any log entries associated with this?

Thank you for the reply.

Are you referring to the Windows Event Logs or a Log on the router itself?

I was again using the router this weekend and noticed that I get disconnected every 3 minutes from the VPN. I checked the logs on the router and it did not have any information that seemed related. I tried a different router and it works fine. Any thoughts on what may be causing this and is it a setting I can change or will it take new firmware to resolve the issue. I need to purchase 2 more routers and am considering purchasing a few more of these routers but I need the VPN to stay connected and presently that is my only problem.

Thank you in advance.

What is the setting for the WAN port speed??  I have seen when the Auto settings can cause problems.

It is the default and if that is auto then that is what mine router is setup for. I will try the fixed speed and see if that helps. Thank you so much for the suggestion.

You might also want to check out the "environment" that the router is set up in.  If you happen to have cordless phones, they might get your router's wireless radio channel and can cause the unit "restart."  I have seen this happen with several 2.4GHz and 5Ghz cordless phone systems.  The newer DECT 6.0Ghz phones are supposed to be "wifi" friendly.

In my case I am using the router hard wired but if you are right and the router restarts that could be it. I just got a brand new Panasonic DECT 6GHz phone system so hopefully that isn't a part of the problem but I will test that out to see if it helps.

Thank you for the suggestion.

You maight also want to test the router with the wireless turned off.  On my home router, when the wireless is turned on, my unit will somehow be "signal" to restart.  I do have a 2.4Ghz cordless phone, for now.

I found this in the log:

PPTP ALG rejected packet

This happens about every 3 minutes about the same time the VPN drops and must reconnect.

Is there a way to resolve this?

Thank you in advance.

I'm having a very similar issue.  Using the same router on my home network, and dialing into a VPN.  VPN drops every 3 minutes when on the wireless - I haven't tried when wired though.  I'm on Vista-32.

I originally had trouble staying connected on the wireless, but upgraded the software for my Intel wireless adapter on my Lenovo laptop (X301), and wireless operates well.  Just can't keep the VPN going.  I shortened the redial to 1 second, but obviously doesn't resolve the issue.

I use DECT 6.0 phones in the house.

Brothers I share your pain. Just wondering if any of you have been successful in resolving the VPN Drop issue.

I appear to have resolved the issue by unchecking Application Level Gateway (ALG) Configuration, PPTP. I was led to give this a try after I found this in the log:

PPTP ALG rejected packet

It appeared about every 3 minutes, about the same time the VPN dropped.
