Linking up with XBOX 360 Help!
« on: January 06, 2009, 03:38:06 PM »

I just installed the DIR-655 since my old router didn't work anymore...with my old router I was able to hardwire from a Desktop PC that was connected to the internet via wireless...i did this through a "bridge connection"...with the DIR 655 it won't bridge...so I tried the sharing opition in the wireless network properties and get this error: Internet Connectin SHaring cannot be enabled.  A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing.

My network is encrypted via WPA...I also tried to hardwire through my laptop...same errors.

Any suggestions or advice to what I am doing wrong?  Thanks!

Hi,

I have had mixed results doing what you are trying to do....  The conflict you are seeing is likely being caused because your router is using the 192.168.0.xxx Internal IP range, and the ICS also defaults to these numbers; in that the "shared IP is 192.168.0.1" which I am guessing is also what your router is set for currently.

One resolution is to move the DIR-655 onto say 192.168.1.XXX IP range; then the ICS should begin to work.

Also you may need to use a crossover cable with the Xbox360 from the 360 back to the PC's ethernet port.

In the end I opted to go with some powerline ethernet units as an easy way to extend my ethernet for the game consoles here.  Then I get to maintain my IP numbering scheme, and the powerline units work quite nicely.  I use 14 Mbps units which seem fine for my needs, altho you might want to go for the faster 88Mbps or even the newest 200 Mbps units....should you go that route.

Lemme know how you make out....

This may be a dumb question  but I I move the IP on my router to the xxxx   1) what numbers do I use, does it matter?  2) Will this mess up the rest of my internet connections..i.e. the desktop PC Wireless connection and my laptop?

Thanks.

Hi,

I use 192.168.1.1 for my DIR-655  I have the LAN DHCP set for  192.168.1.002 thru 192.168.1.254

Its not a bad question you asked.... Unless you don't mind messin around for hours on end....

8-)

OK...I am a novice at this networking thing...at least for this router...how to I change the LAN DHCP...I don't want to start changing a bunch of stuff and mess things up.

Eric,
I am 'famous' for my rude and sometimes harsh comments.  ;) Bearing that in mind, have you had a look at the manual that came with the router....?

Be as rude as you need to be...no problem  :)

Yeah, but it seems that when I change one thing...another thing gets messed up!!!  I will look at it again.

Hi,
Read this whole message before doing anything...

Assuming your current router setup is at (turn off xbox for now, and probably disable the ICS if you are doing this from that same PC) 192.168.0.1   you type that in from your browser's address bar, and press enter....  You should be greeted with the DLink router sign-in screen.  I think the default username is  admin    default password is   password   (you should change the default password to some other word for your router's security).

Click on the  SETUP tab, then click the  LAN item on the left.  You shouldnow see the LAN setup page.  Change the router's IP address to some other besides 192.168.0.1   I use 192.168.1.1  Then below on the page, change the DHCP settings from the 192.168.0.2  etc  to match whatever you chose above for the Router IP range, that being in my case, 192.168.1.2   to  192.168.1.254    You do not need to go as high as .254 in most cases, but I chose to do so in my case.

SAVE Settings   then Reboot the router from the TOOLS page,  SYSTEM item

You will likely have to reboot any PC's connected to the router as their internal IP's will likely change due to the newly assigned DHCP IP range.

Your new router's IP address to go back into setup, would now be (in this example) 192.168.1.1   don't forget that little detail..... in case you need or want to go back and make further changes...

Then go back and re-enabl;e the ICS on the PC you intend to share to the Xbox360...... You may well need to use an ethernet crossover cable to get the Xbox online (often these are yellow, tho I am not sure why).....

Hi,

First thing to try is to disable ICS and then reboot....  See if your connection comes back up....

Go into network connections of Control panel and see what the IP is being assigned for that connection...and also what the gateway setting is reporting.

Hi,

The IP for the PC and the IP for the router (since being modified by you) can not BOTH be 192.168.1.1  if I understood your post....

the LAN IP for the PC should be something like 192.168.1.10  (or whatever the DHCP form the router gives out)....

Okay, I have the crossover cord connected from my laptop to the xbox 360, but still can't get it to connect...I tried this with my desktop wireless but the same problem.  I also have a PS3 and was able to link up online through ICS with my laptop wireless.  Obviously, I am trying to avoid paying the 100 bucks for the xbox wireless connector, but it is starting to look like I may have to purchase it.
