DIR-655 - expansion questions
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:04:54 PM »

Hello,
I currently have a DIR-655 with an ANT24-0230.  I would like to further extend/increase my wireless range to the upstairs of my house beyond it's current abilities.  I have 1 of the gigabit wired LAN ports from the DIR-655 available upstairs.  Would it be possible to connect another wireless router or access point upstairs and have it route all DHCP, MAC filter, WEP, traffic, etc through the original router currently downstairs?

I have reviewed the diagrams for the DAP-1522 and it appears to be the opposite of what I am looking for as it shows wireless bridge to wired devices.  I would like wired connection from downstairs to the upstairs and allow wireless devices to connect to the DIR-655 downstairs or a separate wireless device (DAP, DIR, etc) upstairs.

Is this possible and if so please tell me what device I need to purchase to make it happen.

Thanks in advance!

If you have an ethernet port on the desired location and you don't need wireless you can attach a simple unmanaged switch upstairs (gigabit possibly if you want to transfer a lot of files, otherwise the extra money for gigabit is ill spent). No need for an extra router, multiple routers on the LAN will only increase LAN complexity that require some knowledge to avoid problems.

If you want wireless also upstairs from the ethernet connection upstairs you need to look for an AP which stands for Access Point. They lack firewalls etc (how many firewalls do you need inside your LAN) so are quite easy to install.

I am looking for wireless upstairs and as you mentioned the need for an AP. I have looked at the DAP series and they appear to be intended for the opposite connection method.

Does anyone have any experience with a specific (N preferred) access point that works well with the DIR-655?

For optimum compatibility use an AP from the same brand or at least the same wireless chipset (that's what Dlink guys would also say  ;D ). But other brands (avoid really cheap models) usually will do a good job too (no guarantee though).

The DAP-1522.

The pictures you see probably are in "Bridge Mode."  You'd use "AP Mode" (there's a switch in the back) and connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the DIR-655 to one on the DAP-1522.

I haven't used it myself, but that's how it works.

Thank you!  After further investigation it seems that is exactly what the diagram on the product site is showing (bridge instead of AP) and the detailed view http://www.dlink.com/products/resource.asp?pid=663&rid=2672&sec=1 shows the switch you mention.  I will give that one a go and cross my fingers for decent compatibility and performance.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance!
