Hello,

I have several D-Link routers, and although I had a failure of a DGL-4300, I still think that D-Link offers superior quality and features for the price.

I bought a DGL-4500 about a month after release, and love it... But the Shareport technology would be lovely to exploit.

Thing is, I'm still running on v1.02 of the firmware, as I've read so many horror stories here and on Broadband reports.

So. My question is, is the DGL-4500 v1.15 firmware solid enough to migrate to, without remorse? I don't have to support any game consoles, but I do have a mixed environment of several wireless notebooks...

Advise? Warnings? The number of complaints has died down enough with the release of v1.15, so I thought it would be worth asking.

Seems to be ok if you don't have a PS3 to connect to it.

I would stay at 1.02,  the reason the complaints have died down is because it seems to have fallen on deaf ears, nothing has been done about any of the complaints if you look at the threads there have been no solutions to most of the complaints.  I would stay at 1.02, Lucky you I am at 1.15 and [exploitive deleted] it. Everytime I have to make a change it requires me to reset the router load from the file and then make the changes then reboot it.  If I go back into the gui to make changes on the fly it wont take them without a hard reset and a file load.  Stay at 1.02, fyi not using it for console gaming, only pc gaming

Makes me worry about the girl to whom I recommended a new DGL-4500 to though.

Tell me more of this restart problem. We have MANY units running the 1.15 code, and this is the first I've heard of this little doozy. Please be descriptive and as detailed as possible. I'll attempt to recreate the error.
If I can not, I'll want to replace your unit so I can test the failing one.

For me, 1.15 is stable enough.  Doesn't have much problems.  However, one of the severe problems still is with the gaming, and port forwarding and dropped connections.  1.02 is fine, and I would stick with that too.  The rule "don't fix it if it ain't broken" applies here.  If no problems, then simply don't upgrade.

Well, I have been somewhat concerned about the DNS exploit that I am assuming was quietly patched in v1.12, which would be (if true) why flashing back to v1.02 would be prevented.

  You can have mine... It does the samething.  I can't make any changes without resetting the router.  If you have a search in this forum, you will find many people with this issue.  JackUup23 and I are not the only ones.

The DNS exploits were patched at both the ISP level and on the private network side (your home network, etc).

So, of course you may not see it...however, there are other exploits for the router that have been patched and it doesn't hurt to upgrade.  It's your choice however..

It does not matter if the DNS Exploits were fixed at the ISP level and at the Operating System level.

All those fixes did were to close those loop holes.

But having a router with a vulnerable firmware (DNS Exploit Vulnerability) still leaves you vulnerable.

As to Exploit Behavior, a vulnerable router would not have a Bad DNS or any bad behaviors. Instead, it would be open to Attack from the outside. These attacks generally use worms or they may comprise of a direct hack attempt. When successfully attacked, the DNS server entries in the router get changed to that of a Rogue (bad) DNS server and your password gets changed to lock you out.

This way all your traffic goes directly through a rogue server meaning that anything you do online may get captured, you may find links getting redirected to look alike (phishing) sites, encounter DNS injection of pop ups and encounter any number of other unwanted garbage.

Generally speaking, people who are usually affected are those who leave their routers set to factory defaults or use weak passwords.

Those who take the time to properly secure the routers usually are not affected by the DNS Exploit.

Trouble is, too many people don't know enough to secure their routers.

Thanks Lycan I appreciate what ever help you can be, what happens is I log into the router, (with 1.15) If I make any changes and then reboot, then I go back in and the changes did not stick.  Now I have a file with the settings I like created, so if I do a hard reset, log into the router then load the file, then make any additional changes such as changing the time or setting up a game rule save the changes and just reboot the router (no hard reset) the changes stick, its like it only gives me one chance to get all the settings I like only one reboot allowed.  If I want to change anything then I have to follow this procedure the router will not let me any other way, which is a pain, because I have a gaming rule setup for COD4 on pc and I dont like to have the ports open all the time, just when I am playing so I have a file that has the gaming rule and a file that doesnt have the gaming rule, instead of being able to go into the GUI and enable or disable the gaming rule, I have to do a hard reset and load whatever file I need.  Note once these settings are loaded the router seems to work just fine.  PS I dont know why in my first post about this it says expletive deleted, I know I didnt cuss, anyway any help is appreciated and I would love to send mine into you for testing, let me know thanks.

Well all I know is that many people have been getting different results from teh 1.15.  For me it is rock solid and the only issue I have with the shareport is that it wil not work under Vista 64.  As for your COD4 rules um, I thought I was paranoid about internet security but that is silly.  One thing I have noticed with an earlier build of my os is that the browser did not reflect the correct information till i hit F5 once or twice.  Do not know why and I blame Windows for this and not Dlink and the code.  As for performance it is superb compaired to my earlier Netgears and is even faster than the smoothwall I installed.  I am always concerned about heat build up seeing as I have my router next to a heating duct.  but so far I ahve had no restarts.

You may want to try to clear your browser's cache. If you have Firefox hold down: Ctrl + Shift + Del and select cache.

Oh yeah your berating definitely helps,  First of all open port is an open port,   second I should not have to do a hard reset and load a file everytime I want to change something whether it is closing a port with a gaming rule or changing the time, you seem to be one of the few that has one that works well.
