USB help
« on: January 11, 2009, 04:39:34 PM »

Just found this site! I have a question about shareport. First off, I'm using a Dell laptop with xp sp3. In Dec. I did a complete reinstall of xp and upgraded the firmware on the router. I also installed shareport. It worked fine until I installed my Trend Micro Security and got the BSOD. After looking through this forum I found out that the new 2009 version of TMS did not cause a BSOD. So since I had the 2009 version I decided to try shareport again. Download was fine and no BSOD! New problem though. I can't get the shareport program to recognize that a usb connection has been made with my passport drive. The usb light is on on the router (fw 1.21) but the usb utility stays red and will not see it. Anyone know what might be wrong? I've checked the router to make sure the usb was set to network and rebooted the router and computer. Thanks in advance for any help/advise given.

Check if the utilty is not blocked in Windows Firewall or any other third party firewall.

I'm having this same issue but wasn't aware there was a switch/setting on the router for network or other. I have an HP Laptop running 64-bit Vista, a Compaq Laptop w/XP, a home grown XP Desktop and a WIN2K3 Server. None of these machines; with shareport installed, can see the USB drive when connected to the router. The system tray icon remains red and never recognizes a device was connected. I haven't updated my router so its still running v1.20. I've also tried disabling all AV/SPYWARE, etc apps with no luck. This actually kinda sucks b/c besides the increase range and security, this was my reason for buying this router.

Get firmware 1.21, I think 1.20 does not have the Shareport feature.

Do you use self powered USB HDD? You need to have a USB drive that is self powered. The USB hub will not supply enough current to let the USB spin...

Well I use Trend Micro for the firewall. But I went in to the Windows Firewall section and saw that Share Port was in the exceptions list. So I turned off Trend Micro firewall and turned on Windows Firewall and it works now. So Trend Micro is blocking it. Anyone know how to set up an exception with Trend Micro's Firewall?

Surf to their site, enter their forum or just use the HELP function that is included in the program...

Yes I'm using an ACOMDATA self powered USB Drive. Has anyone in this forum been able to get this to work with either a storage or MFD device? I think D-Link is pulling the wool over our eyes if no one can get this to work.

Well, my USB HDD's work fine. And so do both my printers. No wool there as far as I'm concerned. I am guessing there is a firewall issue/ something blocking the connection of the Shareport ports to the router.

Ok now you have me interested. Are you running network magic? If so do you have Network Lock enabled or disabled? Should I disable firewall, etc during the Shareport install or it doesn't matter? Are there any specials steps I should follow other than what's provided by dlink? This really shouldn't be that difficult.

No, I don't use it. Your firewall does not need to be disabled, but if you're using a third party firewall (other than Windows Firewall) you need to open up some ports...

Just try some settings with network magic (lock on/off ect) or disble the app completely and see if it works.

Strange thing with mine. Now that I got it to work with Windows Firewall on I switched back on my Trend Micro it worked. Even after a reboot. At least its working so I can play around with it. The router seems to connect at slower speeds now though. I was getting 54Mbps and the connection dropped to 5Mbps.

See what happens with speed when you disable TrendMicro.
TrendMicro firewall replicates the Windows Firewall entries to ensure smooth transition when installed.
