DNS not working with 313NA installed
« on: February 07, 2011, 02:06:24 AM »

To fix a bunch of other problems I've installed the 313NA firmware on my rev. C2 DIR-615

I can connect to my ISP and DHCP just fine, and I get DNS servers back just fine, but the DIR 615 doesn't serve DNS correctly for the devices on the LAN.

If I set the LAN machines' DNS manually to the IP addresses provided by my ISP they can look up hosts just fine.

With them pointing at the DIR 615 for DNS they get nothing.

When I attempt to perform a name lookup using the admin System Check -> Ping Test I get "Unknown Host". The same name lookup up by any other LAN machine using the same DNS hosts gets the correct result. I've made sure there's no caching.

Is DNS Relay enabled under Setup/Network settings? Also ensure that DNS IP addressing is filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual which you can find in Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Yep, DNS relay is enabled.

As I said though, the router can't even perform a DNS lookup itself. I even tried pluggin in the D-Link and Google (8.8.8.8) DNS IP addresses. Both of which work from a LAN computer plugged into the router, but the router itself can't successfully look up DNS names.

Makes me wonder if they put that in as a feature of this router or left it out. Kind of odd however this is a pretty basic router.  ::)

I've disabled DNS relay and now the LAN clients just get the DNS server settings (my ISP's)  via DHCP and that works fine. The router itself still can't perform any DNS lookups - I hope that doesn't break anything else...

Hmm..thats odd that disabling DNS reply fixes the internet issue. Unless you are manually putting in the DNS addresses on each device. Normally this would not be done on each device and the DNS relay should be enabled which would pass along the DNS addresses to each device. How my router works.

Not sure why the DNS lookup isn't working.

Hello All,

I've got the same problem with the DIR-615 C2 router. With the stock firmware it was sending the DNS addresses with DHCP.
After the upgrade with the new firmware 3.13A not anymore.

So i've to manually enter on all devices the DNS entries.

Any solution to this problem?

Thanks,
sewru

Is DNS relay enabled or disabled or is it an option on this router?
If its enabled it should pass DNS to the devices. If it's not then it might not. If it's not DNS address still should be passed if you reboot the PCs. Let us know.

DNS Relay is enabled. And checked after reboot on several devices no DNS servers entries are transferred by the DHCP server on the router.

Are Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?

Yes, I did that. After the upgrade and saw that DNS addresses were not send.

But that did not work also.

And what there a reason for the FW update? Just curious.

How are the PCs network properties set up? Are the set to Obtain Addresses automatically? they should be.
How about setting a static reserved IP address for your devices in the router.

What is your ISP service? DSL or cable?
Does the ISP modem have a built in router or is it stand alone?

I recently got a DIR-615-C1 and updated the firmware to 3.13NA.  I'm not really familiar with the router and not an expert on TCP/IP so take this for what it's worth.

Near as I can tell my router provides DNS info as it should.  ipconfig /all shows my DNS server as 192.168.0.1

Looking at router Status shows the DNS servers as the two I set on the Manual Setup page. If I don't enter preferred DNS servers then the Status page shows different DNS servers, I assume retrieved from my ISP.

I did gum up at one point and unchecked the "DHCP routing option" box and this did break the DNS lookup -- ipconfig showed the router as the DNS server but DNS didn't work until I checked the DHCP routing option box.

@Gadgetbuilder:Unfortunately, the DHCP routing option did not work. I can see that DHCP server is sending the router as DNS server. But when i try to do a ping or a lookup it can not find anything.

@FurryNutz: I'm Receiving the ip-address from the DHCP server so that is working fine. I'm also receiving the dns server entry which is the router ip-address.
The router is connected to a DSL-router/modem from my ISP. The DIR-615 router is receiving the settings dynamically from the DSL router/modem.

Next step i've tried to put in the DNS settings manually in DIR-615 router. Not working.
The update was necessary because of frequent loss of my internet connection. And to start the troubleshooting it was first mentioned to first do a fw upgrade, so i did....

Thanks,
sewru
