Accessing the Web GUI from outside the network.
« on: January 13, 2009, 09:16:25 AM »

I would like to be able to access the Administration web page from a remote location (outside my network) to be able to administer my NAS while away from home. I have forwarded port 80 on my router as indicated on D-Link's FAQ website (http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=3127&question=DNS-323). However, when attempting to access the web page by typing in (WAN IP):80, it times out. Is there another port that I need to forward instead of port 80?

Also, I am attempting to connect to my FTP using SSL (Implicit) using SmartFTP. I forwarded port 990, but it doesn't connect. Any ideas?

Can you make sure that your ISP allows incoming connections to port 80, I know mine did not so I had to change it to 8080.

I just used the virtual server feature in my DIR-655.  Simply pick any port, set that in the Virtual Server list and forward it to port 80 (also using the internal IP of your DNS-323).  Then connect to http://WANIP:12345 and it should work fine.

Hope that all made sense...

Are you using static or dynamic ip addressing?

If dynamic, are you using a reserved address - if not, the DNS-323 may not be at the address you are forwarding the port to.
If static, did you configure a default gateway address?

I suppose I can port forward 8080. I am using a dynamic IP addressing scheme, however, I am constantly able to connect to the FTP portion of the NAS with no problems. And actually the way that my router configures port forwarding is that you don't actually enter an IP address, but by selecting the name of the device on the network to forward ports to. So if the IP does in fact change, it still forwards the ports to the device. But since I am able to connect using FTP, I know the address hasn't changed.

harrisjr: To tell you the truth, I don't believe my particular router has the virtual server feature you talked about, but I can check. The router I am using is an ActionTec GT704-WG.

Well I tried port 8080 and it still doesn't work. Are there any other ports that can be used to access the GUI from a remote location?

How exactly did you try port 8080? You need to forward port 8080 of your router to port 80 of your DNS-323. In theory, you can forward any external port, not just 80 or 8080, but you must forward it to port 80 of your DNS-323, because that's the only port the DNS-323 listens on.

Any port should work as long as your router is configured properly to do the port mapping.

I'm guessing you have a screen like this:

Let's say you want to map port 8080 then try this:
Rule Name: WebAdmin
Protocol: TCP
Port Start: 8080
Port End: 8080
Port Map: 80

Like I said, this should work only if your ISP is blocking port 80 (usually because they don't want you to host any websites on the default HTTP port)

Well I guess I am a little confused as to how to forward these ports then. What I do is that I create a rule on my router, name it "Administration", set my Protocol to "TCP", and change my "Port Start", Port End", and "Port Map Start" to "8080" The screen I do this in is as follows:

I then go to the screen to apply the rule. I select the computer name which is the DNS-323, select the rule that I created previously, then apply that rule. The screen I do this in is as follows:

I guess I am not sure how to forward from port 8080 on my router to port 80 on the DNS-323.

Well I think I know what the problem is then. The Port Map has to be selected to port 80. That is where I messed up on. I guess I will need to change this when I get home then. My ISP probably does block port 80 because I had previously used the following:Protocol:
TCP
Port Start: 80
Port End: 80
Port Map: 80

Well I finally got it to work. I just needed to change my Port Map Start to Port 80. Thanks for help.

I take it that in order to connect to FTP over SSL, you have to open Port 443 correct?
