DAP only working with wireless G/B, not N. Any way to fix?
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:24:44 PM »

I have a DAP-1522 that would connect to my router (DLink DIR-815) and allow my devices on the DAP to obtain IP addresses but lose internet capability after a couple minutes, until I power cycled the DAP then the same thing would happen, over and over again.   I tried changing all settings with no success until I turned off the 5ghz band and switched the 2.4ghz to only b/g, not n.  Now it works flawlessly 24/7, but this isn't exactly an upgrade for me and basically makes the DAP useless as my PS3 already has wireless G capability.  Does anyone know a way to get N to work?  Also, and maybe more importantly, would wireless N even be an advantage to me seeing as I am able to harness all my high speed's bandwidth via wireless G (speedtest at 16mbps and I have 15mbps internet) and I am able to get a 78% signal to my ps3 on wireless g with seemingly no lag?  I should also mention that I did at one point have the DAP-1522 working on wireless N with my ISP's supplied router/modem combo SMC 8014WN but it was a different issue on that one - I kept getting the same internet drop until I turned off UPNP.  However having UPNP disabled is a huge drawback because we have multiple guys in this house with gaming consoles and I am unable to open the necessary ports for mulitple IP addresses.  This is why I upgraded to the DIR 815, hoping for better compatibility and also less crowded 5ghz performance, but it doesn't seem to be working that way.

Have you put latest firmware on both devices ad reload factory defaults settings before tryng all configurations?

Yes, I have updated firmware to 1.31 on the DAP and the DIR-815 only has the 1.00 firmware available so I was unable to upgrade.  I have been just accepting my fate of using the 2.4ghz band on wireless G which works fairly well, although I can tell that I'm getting interference (most likely from the cordless phone of the lady who lives below me) because while I'm playing online games I will occasionally get "lost network connection" flashing up on the screen intermittently.  This is usually not enough to make me lose my connection to the server and also only happens for a split second at a time but is enough to interrupt my experience.  I am gaming on a ps3, for reference.  Because of this nuisance I once again tried to get the 5ghz band working.  I should note the only way I was even able to get the 2.4ghz band working was to set my wireless network to output b/g only, as soon as I do n only or b/g/n I get the problem of my DAP showing me as being connected but after a couple minutes I lose actual internet capability, although I may still be connected to the wireless network, I am unable to sign in to playstation network or use internet on my pc.  After a few minutes of non-connectivity, it will magically work again for a few minutes.  This seems to cycle indefinitely.  I tried getting the 5ghz band to work, and it does work for a bit but exhibits the same symptoms.  This leads me to believe that any time the router is broadcasting in wireless n I have this unstability.  I was able to get the 5ghz working in ONLY wireless a, and on this mode it works consistently.  It seems to work fine, and the throughput is good enough for me because I am not transferring large files over my wireless network, simply gaming and browsing so as long as my wireless network can provide the 15mbps of my cable internet then that should be enough.  However, it does irk me that I paid all this money for wireless n equipment and am stuck using wireless a.  I also can't help but wonder if my connection would be better on wireless n instead of wireless a, as far as gaming.  Using wireless a has solved the intermittent "lost connection" problem in my online gaming, but every time that I get killed by a guy who seemingly is playing 2-3 seconds in the future from me, I wonder if my archaic wireless standard (802.11a) is to blame.  What a nuisance.

You wrote about updating firmware on dap-1522 but not about the "resetting to factory default" after the update, from different users experiences it seems important after flashing the reset and also not restore old configurations saved, so configure as new after the flashing, if you have done, i suggest to you to try different configuration that will work the same, ex: switching from AP MODE to AUTO MODE or from AUTO MODE to AP MODE: it should work the same as AP in AUTO MODE if it receive ip configuration from the DIR-815 or in AP MODE forced with the phisical switch and in AP MODE also try using a fixed ip or a dynamic from the DIR device.

I tried every setting imaginable, man.  From default factory to infinity.  Must have spent well over 25 hours on this by now.

Well, I managed to fix it finally.  Tried calling D Link several times but even when they advanced me to level 2 tech support the guy was only willing to guide me through basic troubleshooting that I had already tried hundreds of times.  He offered no insight into the possibility of a hardware problem or incompatibility.
My solution was to get rid of the DIR-815 and upgrade to a DIR-825 since they were on sale.  This router costs almost twice as much regular price but I can see why - it was way more options and advanced features.  Both are dual band a/b/g/n routers but the 825 certainly seems superior.  I am now able to hold a connection on the DAP in any wireless mode on either band.  The only weird thing is with the 815 I had around 75% connection on 2.4ghz and 5ghz band, but with the 825 I only get around 50%, in the same locations.  Seems odd since the 825 is apparently a superior product.  Oh well, I'll take 50% wireless n signal over a 75% wireless a/g signal.
