Router mode and still use port connections?
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:18:44 AM »

Hi,

I'm looking to purchase the DIR-655 router so I can create a wireless network in my pre-wired Cat5e home.  I want to put this router in my living room so I can have wireless functionality for a new laptop, but I also want to keep the hardwired connection to my XBox.  I already have a wired router that connects all of my rooms.

Can I turn this wireless router into an access point and still use the ports in the back so that I can hardwire my XBox to it?  I don't want to use the wireless connection for my XBox.

Internet -- Cable modem -- Router -- Rooms
                                                       |
                                                Living Room -- DIR-655 -- Xbox
                                                                         |
                                                                     Wireless

Is this possible?

Thanks for the help!

Yes thats possible and will work. Just make sure you connect the lan ports of the 655 and you don't use the WAN port at all. You may see NAT issues since you putting 2 routers on the same line when using XBL. You could try putting the xbox in DMZ on the 655.

It's recommended to wire the xbox to th first router in line so that you can take advantage of it's QoS features and prevent any NAT issues that can be seen using this configuration.

The problem is that my Cat5e wiring was intended for phone use.  My cable modem that I got from my ISP is phone and data, but I only have one Cat5e jack in each room - no RJ11's.  Which means I have to put my cable modem in the wiring box and the router next to it which then connects all my rooms.

I'm looking to replace my current hardwired router with the D-Link DGL-4100.

Now that I think of it, should I do this instead or would it be overkill?

Cable modem -- DGL-4100 -- Switch -- Living Room -- Switch -- DIR-655 (Access Point)
                                                                              |
                                                                           XBox

What would putting the Xbox in the DMZ accomplish?

That makes better sense. Understand that resent experience with cable modems that have phone and internet built in will probably introduce NAT issues for gaming if you connect another router to it. I'm not sure if you can bridge these modems to external routers like you can with DSL Modems.

I presume that your cable modem possibly has a built in router. I would check to see if the Cable modem has a DMZ. If it does, you could put the 4100 router on its DMZ so that the 4100 gets everything, then connect up the everything to it, including the xbox connected to the swtich.

If this works out, then review the gameing and gamefuel sticky in the 4500 forum for gamefuel setup on the 4100. The data information is the same, just the UI looks a bit different.

I have the feeling this is going to get expensive... Do you think I would have issues if I hardwire the XBox through the second switch in the diagram since it would then go through the first switch and to the DGL-400?  I won't connect the XBox wirelessly.

My cable modem is a basic Motorola and I can't access it's internal settings.

No you won't have any problems using switches. They don't interfere any. I use one switch off my 4500 thats in the living room and the living room xbox runs off of it. Just make sure they are good switches and cables and run at least 100 or Gb speeds. Even though older xboxs don't run GB speeds, never hurts to have some over head on the line. Does the new xbox run GB LAN speeds?  ???

I recommend running shortest length of cable between the cable modem and the router. I have a 1 footer between mine.

I think I might yank the first switch for now as I don't think I'll need it quite yet and just get myself a new 4100 router.

I'll check out your post in the 4500 forum too!

I hope you're getting paid for this advice!  I really appreciate your time today :)
