Connecting DIR-655 to DSL-526B using bridging
« on: March 05, 2011, 03:21:03 AM »

I rencently moved house and after 10 years on cable at 19400 Mbps I'm now on ADSL 1 at 1500 Mbps. I have a DIR-655 which I want to keep, and I've purchased a DSL-526B to connect me to the Internet. (I was originally told ADSL 2+ was available, but then I was told I am on a pair gain system and only ADSL was available.

Before I set up bridging I changed my password on thr DSL-526b now I can't log into the device. Is there a way to fix this without a factory reset?

The DIR-655 has all my DHCP reservations, ACLs, Web filtering, MAC address filters, QoS and schedules. The DSL526B has only a small subset of the features of the DIR-655 so I want to set things up to use the DIR-655 as the controlling device and the DSL-526B as nothing more than a modem.

Once I'm back into the DSL modem, I can set it to bridge mode. My DIR-655 manual appears to say nothing about bridging. So...

(1). Do I only have to enable bridging on the DSL modem?
(2). My ISP runs PPPoE. I note that both devices support this. I assume I leave the PPPoE settings (username, password etc), in the DSL modem, and do not put the details into the DIR-655.
(3). I then plug ethernet cable from DSL-526b to Intenet port of DIR-655
(4). I use 192.168.1.250 as the DSL-526B's address. I used to use the same address for the DIR-655. I assume I need to give the DIR-655 a new address (Eg 192.168.1.251)?
(5). DO I still point the PCs at the DSl-526B for the gateway and DNS or do I point them to the DIR-655?

After this, I reboot both devices and everything should work?

IF you can't get logged into the DSL modem, you'll need to do a factory reset. Then log in and set up the DSL modem for bridge mode. That should be all that you'll need to do. I would call your ISP provider as they can help you do this.
Once that is done, then you'll need to set up the 655 router for PPPoE under Setup/Internet/Manual. Put in the required account information that the ISP gave you, again your ISP can help you here.

Once this is done. Power off everything then turn on the DSL modem and let it sync. Turn power on the router and let it sync up. Log into the router and go to the Status/Device info page. You should see a WAN section. IP address, gateway and dns should be filled in. Copy and paste the Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses from here into the Setup/Internet/Manual section if it's not already there.

Errr. Actually, ISP didn't want to help me because they dont know the router or the modem I use. It is not the one they supply. That's why I posted here.

The first paragraph makes sense, but I got lost trying to follow the second paragraph. The IP address you are talking about is the internet (WAN) side - the DHCP address assigned by the ISP.

You say log into the router then copy and paste from here to here, basically.

The IP address I was talking about is on the LAN side - I can't have two devices with the same address, so I have to change the routers address, right?

And I would then point the PCs at the router and NOT the modem, right?

I could just go and do it, I'm concerned that once I start fiddling I may not be able to get it back up, so I'm just trying to make sure I understand what I'm doing before I start.

thanks

Ok, After you get the DSL modem bridged and set up correctly. Power the modem down. Connect the PC to the router and enter in the DSL PPPoE information and set it up correctly. Power it down. Power up the Modem and let it sync. Power up the router and let it sync. Your already connected to the router. You should be able to get internet at this point.

Verify on the router that the DNS IP addresses I specified in the 2nd paragraph are on the router. Make sure they are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual on the router.

I do not mean to be disrespectful but are you referring to the D-Link DSL-520b modem?  If so,then I feel your pain since I also had a similar problem with my DIR-655.  I called D-Link for support (since my ISP did not support the modem) only to find out that the representative was unaware that D-Link sold this product.  After hanging up on the knowledgeable person, I did some more research and discovered that under the Connectivity section I had to use MER (MAC Encapsulation Routing) in order for my modem to function as bridge and save me from changing my router setting.  It worked like a charm.  Hope that this helps you.  It may or may not but good luck.

Hi, no. I have a DSL-526B modem.

I have been playing around with the settings for a couple of days when I could find a few spare minutes. It seems to be working; I noted the following;

1. When using the bridging mode the modem defaults to LLC/SNAP bridging
2. I had to make sure the IP address of the router and the modem were different. The router is .250 and the modem is now .251
3. I can no longer access the modem setup unless I disconnect the router and put things back to basics.
4. I could not provide the PVC settings in the DIR-655 like the modem; which would not connect without them
5. I have noticed no difference is download speeds.

What are the PVC settings? I presume this is the PPPoE account information? If so then they are located under the Setup/Internet/Manual. Select the drop down menu where is says DHCP and select PPPoE. You'll be able to enter the account information for the DSL there.

When you put the DSL Modem into bridge mode, it's known that you loose web access to the modem in that mode.
