Fluctuating / erratic ping
« on: March 06, 2011, 11:27:19 AM »

For the past few weeks my ping has been fluctuating. Its normally in the mid 40's when connected to one server but has been jumping to 300 or more and then dropping back down to normal every 5 seconds or so. I know its a router issue since I've tried hooking up a laptop directly to the modem and it works fine. It also works fine when I borrowed a friends router to make sure so I know its my router that's causing this issue. I've tried changing the channel as well just to give it a try and no difference. Its fine for general use but for gaming its a major issue. So any ideas to correct the issue would be greatly appreciated.

How are you connecting to the router? WiFi or Wired?

Are you using DHCP addressing on the router for your devices or static?
Do you have Advanced DNS services enabled on the router?

Also what is your ISP service? DSL or Cable?
What is the ISP modem? Stand Alone or built in router by chance?

It wasn't and issue until a few weeks ago and I've had the router for about a year.

Its an issue whether or not I connect through wired or wireless.

I haven't changed any settings on the router since I got my new computer several months ago.

I use DHCP and I don't believe I have advanced DNS services enabled on the router.

My ISP is cable and its ISP modem.

How was the router working before you got this new PC? What OS was the Old PC? What is this OS version of this new PC? Try a different PC or OS to be sure?

Any Anti Virus or Firewall SW installed on PC?
Try setting up Static IP addressing on the router for your PC.
Check the Advanced DNS service statis to be sure.

I got the new PC long before the problem came up. It worked just fine when I got the new PC. The erratic ping issue is occurring to all the computers in the house. We use both XP and Win7 on the computers we have.

Yes we do have internet security (kaspersky) but I've tried disabling it and it doesn't make a difference. Nor should it since I've been using it for years without any issues.

Why would changing setting to static help? It was never an issue before a few weeks ago. No new computers have been added or setting changes have occurred in several months.

Not sure about the advanced DNS settings. but I've never messed with that so it should be on the default setting. Not sure where to check it.

Not saying that how it's been setup has been a problem however trying static settings is a means of troubleshooting problems.

Have you shut off ALL PCs accept for one to check the ping times? Turn off Wifi as well.

You can check to see if Advance DNS Service is enabled under Setup/Internet/Manual.

The questions i'm presenting are just recommendations to help and try to narrow down what might be causing your ping time issue.

I would also try to see if you have a friend or neighbor that you could test this router out on to see if the problem is following.

I have tried just have one pc on at a time to check pings and they're all pretty much the same.

I did try setting it to static and that didn't help at all. I followed your instructions to find whether I'm using advance DNS settings but I still don't see it. Maybe my version is a bit different.

I'll try testing it at a friends later tonight.

Thanks and have a great day
