Can someone make some clarifications about 300Mbps?
« on: March 08, 2011, 06:11:54 PM »

I have a dual band WiFi card.  When using inSSIDer v2.0 I can see both the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz showing a max rate of 300 (N) on both bands.  When I connect to the 5Ghz I can hit 300Mbps but it bounces. I can see that the 5Ghz side is trying to use two channels but one drops off and comes back on while the other stays static.  I imagine when this happens it impacts the 300Mpbs speed on this band, 5Ghz.

On the 2.4Ghz band I can only seem to get 130Mbps.  Even though that inSSIDer v2.0 shows 300 (N) as max rate.

FYI:  both bands are set to Channel Width = Auto 20/40 Mhz.

The maximum connection speed you will get at single mode N at 5Ghz will be 300Mb. When operating at 2.4Ghz, the maximum connection speed you'll get is 130Mb.

I think there is a bug in inSSIDer where the 5GHz channel width seems to bounce.  I've read a few posts on the metageek forum about this.

To get the best performance out of 2.4GHz band you need to use inSSIDer to see which channels are being used by other routers in the neighborhood.  Then set a fixed channel.  The best choices are usually 1 or 11.

Been using channel 3 (2.4Ghz) as the others are busy.

I can get 300Mpbs on my new laptop on 5Ghz but 130Mpbs on 2.4Ghz. Thought I'd heard something about channel bonding to get 600Mbps. Or did I misunderstand? The 825 is Dual Band and so is my WiFi card in my laptop.

Confused then: inSSIDer v2.0 says both 5 and 2.4Ghz are running at 300Mpbs on N (Max Rate = 300(N) ).

I assume fluctuation of the speeds are do to variables in my locale with other wireless interference?  It also looks like with channel bonding as, apparently, with other speeds will be impacted when you have overlapping signals. So i you lived in a house on about 3 acres or more if you had neighbors with WiFi.

Check the channel width setting in the 2.4MHz band wifi setup.  If it's already set to auto. Maybe just for laughs try channel 1 or 11.  You still might get better performance if your neighbors signals aren't very strong on those channels.  I don't have problems with neighbors wifi because my house is about 60' wide with about 20' to 30' between houses.  Unless you're in a college dorm, apartment building or neighborhood with no elbow room between houses I wouldn't' worry too much about neighbors.  You'll probably have more problems with other wifi devices in your own home or problems with the distance l between rooms and floors.

inSSIDer is only reporting the max speed possible that your wifi card/laptop is reporting to the OS.

The 5GHz band works best close to the router.  Almost line of sight.  2.4GHz band works better between rooms but you'll lose speed as signal strength drops.

I'll check into your suggestions.  Channel 1 might work but channel 11 is quite busy.  Channel 3 has the least amount of traffic. Out of all the signals I pick up half are N.  I'm downstairs now and the router is upstairs on the loft (in a townhouse) and there it can see several more signals. So the router is challenged a bit I would think.

If the router is upstairs and you're downstairs then that probably explains why you're getting less than 300Mbps in the  2.4GHz band.    If you're close to the router and still can't get 300Mbps then try the things I mentioned above.
