JPEG files with erros
« on: March 19, 2011, 03:38:17 AM »

Dear all;

I had a very odd behavior from JPEG files. So far I thing that is only a JPEG problem. Almost all my JPEGs are with strange colors from 1/3 or half of the picture tills the end. I don’t know what happened or what can solve it, but I’m in panic :-[ with the possibility to lose these thousands of photos from my life!
Any ideas can someone help me?

Just curious. . . did any of these images ever display without issue on the DNS-343 or is this the first time you are viewing them after placing them on the NAS?

When I insert them they where working perfectly. The first time I noticed this problem it was 2 months ago even if I have the DNS343 for one year and half. I now noticed that some of my mp3 are also damaged. I'm really in panic for the photos. I have the photos of all my life in it. I’m not trusting any more the machine!
I already put a lot of hypothesis for solutions, but no solution or reason seams logical. My last hypothesis was the temperature. In fact my NAS is working with one HD Samsung HD154UI and 3 HD Seagate ST31500341AS. The first is not in the recommended list and was the first I bought in the same day I bought the NAS to try it and this is always running below 40ºC, but all the Seagate are above 45ºC and those are officially recommended!
Please someone have any idea about this. I’m at pot to buy another and everyone knows that is quite a big investment!!!
Thank you
Nuno

Is your data stored on a RAID array or Standard Volumes?  If your data is stored on Standard Volumes, are the damaged files on one hard drive or span multiple hard drives? (the answer to this second question is very important)

I've never heard of a case where the DNS-343 damaged files.  I suspect that you either have a failing hard drive or some malware played havoc with your files.  If the damaged files span multiple hard drives formatted as Standard Volumes OR you have a RAID 5 array, you are likely looking at malware or some environmental factor impacting all of your drives.  If the problem is only impacting one drive formatted as a Standard Volume, then you are probably looking at a failing drive.

The first thing you should do is copy your data to another location to prevent further loss/damage. From your post it sounds like you don't have a backup.  Next run the S.M.A.R.T. utility test which you can find in your firmware (Maintenance -> Disk Diagnostic).  This test will determine the health of your drive(s).

These types of errors can occur from bad sectors or general wear on a hard disk nearing EOL.  If you have a RAID 5 array, you probably aren't looking at a failing disk, RAID 5 protects against corruption from a failing drive by removing the disk from service.

Thank you very much for your help;

In fact I have a RAID 5, so is very hard to be a physical problem. Nevertheless I will follow your advice to backup and to run S.M.A.R.T. application. In case that nothing will be diagnosed as a physical problem in one or more hard drives, do you have any advice for software (freeware preferably) to check for malware in the NAS?
Thank you once more for your help.

There are plenty of freeware options out there. Microsoft makes a freeware product (Microsoft Security Essentials) and most of the major antivirus/malware software providers offer trial versions of their full products.

You should also keep in mind that RAID 5 creates data redundancy is not a substitute for maintaining a backup of your data.  Even with RAID 5, you should maintain at least one separate physical backup of all critical data.
