DWL-2700AP rev.B - Weird DHCP issue
« on: March 29, 2011, 04:59:16 AM »

Hi All,

I'm using a brand new DWL-2700AP rev.B with the firmware v3.21 revision preinstalled. We're having trouble with it and our Windows 2003 Server DHCP system.

About 80% of the laptops we try to connect to this access point don't receive a DHCP reply from the DHCP server on the network. The built-in DHCP server is switched off on the access point in question and the other 8 access points connected to the same network don't have any trouble with DHCP requests going through them at all.

I initially thought it was a general connection issue but if you statically assign a valid IP address to a laptop that fails DHCP, you discover that actually the connection is fine and you can use the wireless network as though nothing were wrong. The DHCP pool isn't nearly full and even systems with MAC-based DHCP reservations aren't receiving replies. If you try to refresh your DHCP lease you do get a reply and are assigned an IP address but within 10 seconds the access point drops your connection and forces you to reconnect, effectively dropping DHCP lease.

Oddly, about 20% of the laptops we use have no trouble what-so-ever. There appears to be no pattern between those that work and those that don't. The OS, manufacturer, wireless card, nothing seems to be consistent between those that work and those that don't. The only consistent thing is the particular access point in question.

The access point is running without encryption or MAC address filtering. Multi-SSID is disabled, as are pretty much all the other features (although do ask me if you want to know about any in particular) so it's running a standard vanilla setup. The only real change is that the wireless antennae have been replaced with a single high-gain outdoor unit, although as there doesn't seem to be a reception problem and the aerial diversity is set to the correct single transceiver, I don't see how it could be a problem.

Are there any known issues with this access point that might be causing this? Has anyone had a similar problem? As it's fresh out of the box to replace an identical unit, could the new one have been damaged in transit and is malfunctioning?

I found this problem as well.  An upgrade to firmware 3.30 has fixed this issue.

We can presume that after 3 years, the OP has moved on or hopefully has resolved this issue. Thank you for your feedback and hope it helps any future users.
