Author Topic: iTunes KILLING my bandwidth! Any experts know how to control this hog?  (Read 5454 times)

This has finally become a BIG problem. Any time I have iTunes running and downloading podcasts, it hogs all the bandwidth for the Internet (but not the local network). This is not only slowing down access from the machine running iTunes and the downloads but for every other device trying to web browse.

FYI, I'm running two Macs and one Windows/Dell PC on the network. All are hard-wired (Ethernet) to the DIR-655.

So, anybody have any ideas how to throttle iTunes? I did some research and found that I am apparently not the only one having this issue.

I'm about to bail on iTunes entirely and try to get used to Miro, which does allow bandwidth control.

Try to set up QoS for it and the device your running iTunes on. Set a low priority like 200 or 255.

I have no idea precisely how to do that but will endeavor to give it a whirl. I do have QoS running, but no rule.

Thanks for indulging. I hope this will help others with this same problem.

It would be best if you should find the actual ports the iTunes uses to put in specific port ranges however

Local IP Range is the device(s) IP address that you have iTunes loaded on. If only one then put in the IP address in the FROM and TO boxes. If there are more than onedevice, and the IP addresses are sequencial then you would put in the 1st IP address and the last IP address of the last device that has iTunes loaded on it.

Priority would be like 200-255.
Protocol: BOTH
Local and Remote Port range, put in the following: 0 to 65535
Remote Port Range, put in the following: 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255
Try this and see if it works. You might have to put in the other devices as a rule and set there priorities to HIGH, i.e. 10-20.
