Router woes with multiple Xbox 360's
« on: April 11, 2011, 11:10:18 AM »

Folks,

Here is my situation. my wife bought me a Motorola SBG 6580 cable modem/wireless router (I have just filled out the paperwork to send this back). I have ordered a Motorola 6120 modem and am now looking for a suitable router to add. My network consists of 3 XBox 360 Live accounts on 4 Xbox 360's. A Wii ,3 laptops and a desktop as well as 2 Dish Network HD receivers. The Xbox's, Dish receivers and Desktop compeuter are all connected via wired connections. The laptops via wireless. This problem is really just about the xbox's online simultaneously.

Will the DGL-4500 allow me to get at least 2 of the Xbox 360's to have open NAT access when being used online simultaneously? This is where the Motorola failed. it would allow 1 Xbox to be open and the other would be at the least moderate and more often strict in NAT access. This has caused the wife to come slightly unglued.

the 6580 has a built in router and thus would be an connection issue if you had that and the 4500 on the same line. Having 2 routers can cause connection issues, specially with XBL. This usually results in Strict NAT messages on games. I would have tried to bridge the 6580 modem if it has this feature. We see this on DSL modems alot. See if the 6580 has a bridging feature.

The 6120 doesn't as I have one and love it.

Follow the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky for setting up multiple xbox consoles. I have 2, a buddy of mine has 3 on his system and they all game well at the same time.

Thanks for the fast response.

Hmmm. I spoke with Motorola support. They were saying that the issue I was having running the 6580 was that there was a conflict in the port forwarding of the router with the xbox's. I had everything direct connected to the 6580 or a 8 port switch. I have a Dlink router that I am not using. I will see if I can get that connected tonight.

At least it's good to know I can run multiple xboxs with the dgl-4500 with open Nat's .

Also I have to say, the SBG-6580 modem portion is incredible. my throughput has been consistent. it went from 14dl/1.9 ul (12/2 tier) to 22.9d/3.9u

Ya, if you run the 6580 alone with XBLs, you'd need to set up the QoS portion of the modem to handle xboxes, if it has anything like that. However if you can bridge the modem, i'd use the 4500 for gameing for sure. You might look WiFi on the modem as well, not sure though. I hear about the WiFi on that, kinda jealous. Oh well, I enjoy my 6120 alot. Very stable connection unless the ISP goes down. LOL.

Ya, I like the 4500 and the gamefuel settings for xbox. Does a great job. Let us know how it goes. I need to update that sticky. Got a better way of implementing gamefuel for multiple xboxes:
DGL-4500 Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL.
Recommend wired connections for gaming too.

Yea, I would suggest the 6120 over the 6580, specailly if you have your own network. Granted it has the 8/4 but most ISP don't support more the 4/1 so it doesn't matter that much. Just try to get the SB6120 and not the SB6121 if you can.

I would be curious to know what changes to the sticky you would suggest on the gamefuel for multiple xboxes.
