Basic problem: ping resolves all host names on internal lan to an external ip

I can:
Ping using lan ip ( 192.168.2.253 )
Use internet on all clients
Ping hostnames if entry in hosts file on local machine

I cannot:
Ping using hostname ( media-pc )

As I side-note, I also have a 8-port switch attached to my router via a cross-over cable ( D-Link DGS-2208 )

Shouldn't the DNS function of the DIR-825 take care of this?

Is the external IP address your router's WAN IP at the time of the ping?

No.  WAN IP first octet is 98 and this responds with 24

On.

If I turn it off internet is down

I've temporarily resolved the problem by turning DNS relay off and setting up a DNS server on my WHS, but that's not what I wanted nor is is good for the novice...

once you disable the DNS-relay the LAN addresses of your machines will have to be renewed. The router will no longer resopond to DNS requests and will want to forward them to the WAN side DNS servers.
but thats not going to solve your issue. you should ne net-bios name resolution with just the local network. do your PC's have firewalls or anti-virus suites on them>?

All pc firewalls are off

I have 1 machine with McAfee anti-virus and 2 with Computer Associates.

1 Machine with nothing.

ONLY anti-virus, no internet security anything.

Network consists of:

2 Windows XP Pro 32 (Wired)
2 Windows Vista Ultimate 32 (Wired)
1 Windows Home Server (Wired )
1 Linksys Media Extender ( Wireless )

Looking into "workgroup computers" I find all of the items on the network, but I still cannot ping via host names.

Check the anti-virus softwares.  Some other software will turn off the NetBIOS name resolution, as part of their "Internet worm" virus protection.

Now, after a period of time the router locks up.

No traffic on LAN or WAN  ???

After a power cycle of the router all is good again

Does this help?

Code: [Select]
C:\Documents and Settings\Brian>nslookup
DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.2.1: Timed out
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server:  UnKnown
Address:  192.168.2.1

> lisas
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  192.168.2.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    lisas.BATES
Address:  24.28.193.9

If I manually set the DNS on the router to the router's LAN IP address it will resolve my hostnames fine.  It just doesn't seem to want to be bothered and always pushes them to the WAN DNS server.

If I disconnect the router from my LAN I can ping hostnames.

Boot up the router and the LAN hostnames resolve to a WAN IP address
