Sees network no internet on desktop or laptop though
« on: April 15, 2011, 06:16:38 PM »

Have Win 7 on a desktop and laptop. Tried several ways through network wizard(novice on PCs) to setup network and no internet connection with either unit. The router sees the internet and the laptop picksup the network I setup but can not connect on either PC. I know I don't have a setting write and I do not know where to start again or what specifically to look for. We just want Internet on both PCs. Thanks for any help.

I recommend setting up Static reserved IP addresses for all devices connected to the router. Ensure auto obtain IP addressing is set up on the devices.

Both are setup to obtain addresses automatically. My desktop is wired straight from the router(2 foot cable) and it will not pick up internet thru the router unless i bypass it straight to the modemn. By the way its Hughesnet 9000 and works good with the router out of the picture. The laptop picks up the network to the router and even lets me configure the router from the laptop but no internet for either when the router is plugged up from the modemn. Could it be my ISP not letting the router connect?  Do I need to set certain IP addresses to each device? Thanks for the replies.

Did you clone your desktop's MAC address to the router?  Some ISP's require this, it makes the router look like the desktop from the ISP's perspective.   You can check this on the Status page, the WAN MAC sould equal the PC's MAC (seen at the bottom of the Status page.

If you go to Tools/System Check can you ping the DNS server IP shown on the Status page?  Can you ping the desktop from the router?  Can you ping the laptop from the desktop?

It's possible that Hughesnet handles things differently. I remember when I had SAT. What a adventure that was. I would call Hugesnet and ask them if they can help you connect a router up. I know when i had SAT, there was proxy SW that I has to use later on which wouldn't work with a router. Thank god Cable came to where I lived. I would call and ask. Hopefully its something simple as cloning a MAC address. Let us know how it goes.

Just wanted you to know after months of frustration I got the pc's online. I first had to change the IP address on my router, conflicted with the HN9000. I then got online with my desktop...finally. But I could not even access the router thru the laptop. Funny I could before. I had to make a code under WEP at 64 bit and it worked. I keep using the same code I made and it just caught on. But thanks for pointing me in directions I could not have found without you guys. I just wanted everyone to know there is a way of working thru this network problem.

Glad you found the solution. And just FYI, the routers IP address does not have to be a 192.168 number. Can be just about anything. Mine is set for 6.#.#.# which is the house number for my place.  ;)
