Hi all,


have 2 dns 323, and love em, but i have outgrown a 1tb drive and have a 2tb on order, i have taken out a 1tb full of stuff from the dns323 and tested it on win7 with a linux driver app, and it sees it all fine, what i would like to know is, when the 2tb drive arrives, can i install it in the nas, and get it formatted and remove it and add it the pc with the old 1tb and copy the stuff over and put it back in the nas and it all work fine, or do i have to ftp all the data across, which could take quite a while obviously, lol


the drive i have ordered is a 2TB EADS btw


i forgot and should mention that drives are in standard none raid mode

let me get this straight: you've already moved 1tb disk from nas to pc. You want to place 2tb disk in empty nas, format it, move it to pc, copy data over from 1tb disk and place it back in nas, right?

if so, the nas will probably require you to re-format the 2tb drive as soon as you place it back in.

since the nas has two bays why don't you try a scheduled copy with both disks on? (and then remove the 1tb disk).

Actually - I must disagree with McPillager on this one - if the "linux driver app" allows you to write data, I see no reason why it should not work.

Mind you I haven't tried it personally - but as long as you didn't change the partition structure whilst writing the files, the DNS-323 should not attempt to reformat the drive when you reinstall it.

The potential stumbling block that I see is one of ownership & permissions - the question being who owns the files when they are written by the "linux driver app" - you may have to use chmod or something similar to make them world readable.

Stavr0s - McPillager might be right - here's a guy who did something very similar to what you're proposing, and ran into trouble with it.

well my 2tb WDEADS arrived, it took a while cos i ordered it from florida and im in the uk, lol

i installed it into the nas and it didnt format, it gave me code 112 at about 3% of the format

so i then updated the firmware to 1.08, and got the same msg,
so then i removed the other 1tb from my nas, and left the 2tb as a single drive, i rebooted the unit and it formatted perfectly

so then i shutdown after the format and reinstalled the 1tb into the nas and am now using the dns backup feature to copy all the data off the old 1tb and onto the new 2tb .

obviously this is taking quite a while, upto now about 6hrs lol
but this beats taking the drives out and putting on a windows pc with linux drivers/app and copying that way only to find there is something wrong with permissions etc

its good now that i seem to be able to adjust the fan because this is quite a heavy task so i have put it on full atm.


i am posting this because it may be helpful for others in the same situation

forgot to mention this is a none raid setup but also works for raid as per another thread

What back up App? I didn't notice anything built in to copy between internal drives?

Also I tried to copy from one drive to a drive formatted in the DNS-323 with a Ubuntu Live CD and all files and folders were locked saying I had no permission to access them once it was back in the NAS.

i used the one thats accessible from the login screen, under applications, its called schedule copy i believe, pick applications intead of config when u login

but as of right now i wouldnt recommend doing it

I did exactly what you proposed migrating from WD15EARS (1.5TB) to WD2001FASS (2TB) with firmware 1.09

I formatted the 2TB, installed both drives in my desktop running 7 x64 and ran EXT2FS.

I then used HeatSoft's ADCS software to compare and copy files.

Then I installed the 2TB back in the same bay and everything read fine.

This saved A LOT of time.
