Problem connecting to internet
« on: April 21, 2011, 01:10:22 PM »

My problem is thus:

I had a D-link DSL-G604T router which recently had begun to drop connections, so I decided it was time for an upgrade. I bought a D-link DIR-615 and followed the instructions on the CD, but no internet connection. After several hours of hair pulling I came accross a solution; If I connected the internet port on the DIR-615 to one of the ethernet ports on the DSL-G604T using an ethernet cable I could then connect to the internet.

However this defeats the point of having a new router if I have to use the old one to connect to the internet.

Is there a way to configure the DIR-615 so that is works properly?

Please be as specific as possible if giving instructions

Thankyou.

What ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone modem or built in router?
How are you connecting to the router? Wired or wireless?

Its preferred that you log into the routers web page and set it up that way using a web browser.

My ISP is BT internet. What is the difference between cable and DSL?
I haven't had a modem for 10 years.
Both. I set it up using a wired connection on my laptop, but now I am using the wireless so that I can sit somewhere comfortable.

It never said that in the instructions (not that there were very many to start with). I did try that; I went through the "Internet Connection Setup Wizard" and chose the top option when it came up with the "choose your connection type" window.

The difference between Cable and DSL is that some DSL modems already have a built in router that when putting on another one can have some complications in getting it to run well. Some newer Cable modems are doing the same thing.

It's preferred that when a modem has a built in router that you bridge the modem, thus turning off the internal router and having the modem act as a stand alone modem that will hand off a public IP address to the new external router, i.e. 615 and letting it do all the traffic handling. Thus why we need to know what ISP service and modem you have so we can better accurately give you help in getting your router set up correctly.

DSL mostly uses something call PPPoE account information that a DSL provider has for each account. This involved a name and a user password that needs to be entered into the DSL modem or if bridge to a router, into the routers internet connection setup. Once this is done, the router and modem should connect well and then you would connect the PC to the router and should have internet.

Cable modems are easier mostly as they don't rely on account information to get connected to the ISP. They automatically handshake with the ISP service and if you connect a router, hand off the public IP address to the router and your good to go.

If you do need some additional help with the modem, you can call up the ISP and ask them to help you out and sometimes they can help you set up the router too, sometimes they won't though. Always good to ask.

Short answer? You bought the wrong the device.

The device you had was a modem and router in one. The device you have now is just a router. You probably want to look into getting a DSL-2640B but you may want to contact your ISP and see what they suggest. If you lease that device, you may be eligable for a free upgrade, or some kind of discount. At the very least, they may have a list of compatible, or devices they suggest. Also, try out their support site. Its very imformative. Better then most I have seen.  I found this post on there forums.

So if I replace the DIR-615 with the DSL-2640B I should be able to connect to the internet just like I did before?

Yes that will work since the DSL modem has a built in router. You can bridge the DSL modem and this turns off the router on the DSL modem if you wish to use the DIR-615 router.

Just don't buy it on my word alone. Call up your ISP or better yet, send them a email, email reps don't have to abide by handle times=better answers. They might have a suggestion since not only do they sell 3rd party as a vendor(you can buy right from their site) but they actually manafacture their own equipment. so you might be eligible for a discount. I am pretty impressed with their set up. Thumbs up for your ISP. Havent seen anything like it before here in the states.
