Hey all,

I just a bought a DIR-655 wireless router.

I have Comcast.

I get 12.5 Mb connected directory to the Modem.  I get 12 Mb connected to the DIR-655 using a wired Ethernet connection.

However, wireless is extremely slow. I have one computer that gets as much as 1.2 Mb (only 10% the speed) but with a huge latency.  The rest don't get anywhere near 2 Mb.

I connect two devices through wireless to eliminate the internet provider complete, and it is dog slow. I can't remote desktop, transfer speed won't even sustain long enough to get a reading.

I toggled every setting this things has.  It is on the latest firmware.

I bought the DIR-655 because my DIR-615 crashes every time I turn on my new Motorola Xoom.

I have always bought D-Link home networking equipment, but it is starting to not look good that I remain a customer.

I am considering sending the DIR-655 back to Amazon, unless there is an easy solution. Any easy solutions?

I would try setting the WiFi mode from mixed to single mode G or N or Mixed G and N if you have any devices that support N. If you don't then theres no need to broadcast N.

Any other WiFi routers in the area and house cordless phones can contribute to interference.
Try changing channels, start at 11 and work down thru each channel.

Been seeing some people talk about Droids and Zooms causing issues with routers. Try turning off the 3G wireless when your home and test.

Just because you might be seeing issues with DLink doesn't mean you won't with any other OEM.
Just FYI, you wont see the same speeds on wireless as you will on wired. Many variables and standards that contribute to wireless speeds not being the same.

Yeah, I tried G only, G + N.  Still slow.

I have no cordless phones (I don't even have a home phone).

I turned off every wireless device except 2 and connection between the two is slow.

There is no other wireless device in range. Used to have one in range, the back door neighbor's house.  It was a weak signal but they moved, so not even that could interfere. 

My DIR-615 is flaking out so I would like a new router. The DIR-655 I just bought didn't work, so I had to return it.

I am going to try the DIR-825. If it doesn't work, then I will regrettably have to pick something up other than D-Link, and I have been pretty loyal to D-Link since 2003, 8 years.

I am a little worried about the DIR-825. It has bad reviews. Almost as many 1 stars as 8 stars when there are so many reviews is bad: 76 good to 65 bad.  That is almost a 1 good to 1 bad ration, or 50 chance of getting a bad one.

The DIR-855 had less reviews, but 10 5 stars and 9 1 stars.  The 1 to 1 ratio is still there.

Most the bad reviews are trashing the new firmware! New firmware should increase stability not decrease it. Hardware failures, I can deal with. Buy one, if it doesn't work, return it and get another one, until you get one with good hardware.  But software failures puts us at the mercy of waiting for new firmware.

What is going on with D-Link quality?

Does D-Link need to hire some new quality assurance people?

I wish I could just rip on D-Link, but the quality of wireless routers is pretty low with other brands as well.  The Cisco E3000 has a wopping 80 1 star reviews out of about 500. However, they have over 220 good reviews. That is about a 4 good to 1 bad ratio.  That is much higher than the D-Link though still way below my expection of 95 good to 1 bad.

I want to remain loyal to D-Link but can I? If the DIR-825 works, I will stay loyal.  If it doesn't, I will have to send it back to amazon and go with Cisco and as a former tech support guy for Nortel Networks, I hate Cisco.

By the way, I did tech support for Nortel Networks wireless routers too, so I am very expert on wireless technologies. 

I have done tech support for 10 years before becoming a developer. That long enough to know that even though I am an expert on the technology, that is not the same as being an expert on one products implementation of the technology, so I am willing to listen and try settings as you suggest. You guys know more than me...

So here it goes...my D-Link-815 is coming from Amazon.

Makes me wonder if there is something going on with the set up or external interferences.

So far no problems with the new D-Link.

I am so happy to not be thinking about this anymore.

No crashes. No problems, even with it all connected: my desktop, laptops, Android, iPhone, etc...
