Wired & Wireless keeps disconnecting
« on: January 20, 2009, 05:33:48 PM »

Hi,

I hope someone can help me.  First off I'll say that I know only the basics as far as networking goes.

I've had the DIR-655 for about a year now, and it's worked great for me until yesterday.  I got home from work and the internet wasn't working; my modem's lights were all normal, as were the router's.  I rebooted both of them and it worked again. Half an hour later though, it stopped working.  I called my ISP and they said that if the modem's lights are all on, it's likely a problem with the router.

So, I called DLINK's support dept, and they had me change my SSID, as well as the wireless channel to 11 and the beacon period to 80, RTS Threshold to 2300.  It worked again for a little while, but disconnected an hour later.

Each time it stops working, I can get it going again with rebooting, but it's very annoying to do that every hour or so.  Not to mention it's frustrating when it disconnects while playing online on the xbox360.

Funny thing is, just rebooting the router doesn't get the connection going again, but rebooting the modem alone will.  Does that mean the problem might actually be with the modem?

If it helps, I have 2 computers wired to the router, and a couple of gaming consoles connected wirelessly. The router is hardware version 2 and I have the latest firmware.

Could be the modem. How does the modem connect to the router: by a static IP? And how is your router set to receive the IP from the modem?

I believe it's dynamic, my ISP is Shaw Cable.  And.. I'm not sure how the router receives the IP from the modem; how can I find that out?

http://192.168.0.1/Basic/WAN.shtml

If your modem hands out an internal IP to the router by DHCP, try setting a static IP from modem to router. Then set 'Static' on the router page shown above, and fill in the static IP that was picked in the modem.

It seems that the pass on by the modem to the router of the IP does not work correctly.

Othe roption to try: set WAN port speed to 100 (or 10 if applicable) instead of 'Auto'. (http://192.168.0.1/Advanced/Network.shtml)

I wasn't aware it was possible to set a static IP from modem to router.  How would I go about doing that?

Again, sorry, I am somewhat clueless when it comes to this sort of thing.  I appreciate the help, though.

I have a "similar" problem.  I have the A3 hardware version with version 1.21 firmware loaded.  I have both hard-wired and wireless clients.  DNS Relay is disabled with Primary and Secondary DNS servers manually entered.  WAN Port Speed is set to Auto.

When the "fault" occurs, all of the clients still have access to all of the internal network resources (printers, file servers, other clients, etc.), but none of them can access the internet.  All of the status lights indicate that both the router and cable modem (Motorola Surfboard) are operating normally.  The activity lights on both devices even indicate that they are talking to each other.

This fault can occur as frequently as 2-3 times an hour to as infrequently as 2-3 times per day.  I have not been able to correlate it with any specific internet application (web browsing, online gaming, IM, etc.), although it appears to be more frequent with more clients online.  That said, it has occurred with only one client surfing the internet.

The difference to what kenshin86 is experiencing is that I can restore internet access by either (1) cycling power on the router, (2) rebooting the router via the GUI or, (3) telling the router to Release and then Renew the Connection from the Device Info Status Screen.  This status screen shows the Cable and Network Statuses as Connected while the fault is active.  Note that I don't have to do anything to the cable modem.

It just dawned on me that I don't know if I have tried to connect to the modem's GUI while the fault is active.  I will try this next time the fault occurs.

Anyone have any ideas?  Lycan?

Thanks!

How to set it in your modem... Get the manual, would that be a suggestion?
(no offense, but it's kinda hard to help if you don't even mention the brand/model...)

Try reflashing the 1.21 firmware OR (try this first) set the WAN speed to manual - 100 mbit.

EddieZ,

I have reflashed 1.21.  After reading the postings regarding restoring saved configuration files in 1.21, I reinstalled 1.11, restored factory defaults, reinstalled 1.21, restored factory defaults and then manually entered my settings.

I will try changing the WAN Port Speed to 100Mbps when I get home tonight.

FYI - I have also had problems with frequent wireless restarts with this router.  They stopped after changing the Transmit Power from High to Medium.  My guess is that either high amplitude reflections within my house or an elevated noise floor (or maybe spurs) within the router itself were hammering the receiver until it threw its' hands in the air and gave up (rebooted).  In any case, it appears to be a transceiver design problem.

Thanks!

My bet would be a minor driver issue in the firmware for A4 version (new radio...)

Sorry, Shaw Cable provides us with the modem, so we don't have access to a manual. It's a Motorola SurfBoard, SB5102. I actually tried calling Shaw to see if they could help me do as you suggested, and they said that isn't possible. Is there anything else I can try?

Get the user guide at Motorola

Sounds like to me that the Modem if faulty. You should have them (Shaw) come in and replace the modem or see if you have way you can do it. Some ISP will allow you to get your own modem just have to let know you did that so they can had MAC Address etc to their system otherwise you can't get online.
