DIR-655 and Hughesnet
« on: May 29, 2011, 12:32:58 PM »

My setup is Hughesnet HN 9000 satellite modem to a Linksys gigabyte switch. That works just fine. One of the cat5e from the switch goes to my DIR-655 at the other end of the house. The only way I can connect to the internet after installing the 655 is to connect the cable to a LAN port. It won't work connected to the WAN port of the router.
After a search, I read something about the router having the same IP address as the Hughesnet modem. How do I do that? I know just about nothing about networking. I have tried several routers in the past. the only one that ever worked with no problem was an old Belkin g router.

The preferred way to connect devices is the following.
ISP modem>router>switch.
You should be able to connect to the routers WAN Port from the ISP modem, however if you connect it to the LAN port, it just becomes a switch it self when you disable DHCP server on the router.
You can change the routers default IP address under setup/networking.

Thanks. When I remove the switch and connect the Hughesnet satellite modem to the WAN port on the 655 router, it connects to the network, but I get no internet access at all.
If I change the IP address, what about the subnet setting?

Yes you could change the IP address and sub net of the router and try. Possible that the SAT modem and router have the same 192.168 address and could conflict. Does the SAT ISP have any information on using there modem with external routers? Just curious. I know years ago when I had one, it was a major pain to connect on up as they required proxy and connection drivers. I presume and hope this is not the case. I would ask the ISP and check to see if they support this configuration. Possible that the SAT modem has a router as well and thus you might not need and external one. Let us know if you can gleam any info from the SAT ISP. BTY, who is the ISP?

The ISP is Hughesnet and if I understand correctly, their modem has a built-in router. Unfortunately, their crappy tech support will NOT answer any questions about any networking problems whatsoever. In their limited networking info available, they recommend a switch or WAP as the preferred networking method, but I have used a Belkin wireless router for years without any problems, but thought it was a good time to upgrade.

Ok then, I downloaded the PDF for this modem and can see that the examples of the modems web page seems to be set for 192.168.0.1.
In the browser address bar, type www.systemcontrolcenter.com or 192.168.0.1 and press Enter.
Note: To use 192.168.0.1, the satellite modem must be configured for a private IP address, and DHCP must
be enabled on the computer.

This is a default for the modem and the 655 router.

I would do this, log into the 655 routers web page and set the Routers IP address for something like 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.1.1 or anything different than 192.168.0.1. Can even be numbers made up to your house address number. I use mine that way. Sub net shouldn't be affected.

See if the router will connect to the SAT modem then?
The manual also mentions of inputing public IP addresess into the OS however I presume this is when a PC is directly connected to the SAT modem. Lets try the DHCP first.

I don't see a DMZ in the modem settings anywhere or I would recommend putting the 655 routers IP address in the DMZ then you would be good to go. Let us know if this works.
