DIR-655 Wired Connection Randomly drops and reconnects
« on: January 22, 2009, 05:59:47 PM »

Hi people, I thought I would try this before I return this router like the previous one.  I have h/w A4 with f/w 1.21 came like that off the shelf.

My NIC on the mobo is a realtek pci gigabit RTL8110SC(L).  and OS is win xp pro sp3.  Im also on dsl with modem - 4200 speedstream which I cannot access.

So i am wired to the router from my desktop and randomly the connection will drop and pick up again.  This NEVER happened with the old router I was using (dlink DI-614+) and still works.

I have turned the dns relay off and manually assigned open dns, it seems to have sped things up a bit and slighty reduce the amount of disconnects, but it still happens ( a pain when playing css or dl big drivers)

The #1 lan port light will go off for a sec or 2 and come back on.  Also it is picked up in event viewer as event 4201

"The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{F8D30E19-3ABE-4B45-BA06-F4B97DEC044E} was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

This is the same id as when the pc starts.  I am wondering if there is any realtek HW in the router that may cause this, or FW or other?
I had a dir-655 about 3 months ago also, I think it was an A3 with 1.20 or earlier firmware and did it way more often so I had to return it.

The disconnects rarely last more than 5 seconds, but thats an eternity in css :D
Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

- Latest NIC driver installed?
- Try setting WAN speed detection to 100 manually instead of Auto on the router, and set the same with your NIC driver in your OS.

A3 router has Realtek Gig chipset for the gig switch ports. All my gig cards are Realtek also. Yeah go to the Realtek site and grab the latest drivers for the NICs. I set all of them to 1GB full. Then go into a another external gig switch. I had managed to get this max out though... on XP Pro SP3

I still have the DNS Relay enabled but you need this feature since is forward the DNS Client & DNS Server. The bug in 1.20 and up firmware has the issue.

Thanks EddieZ.  Updated the driver and SEEMS to be fine now.  Strange thing is though, the date on the old and new driver are the same lol I think version # jumped up a .0001 though.  Realtek never seemed to have the same stability as marvel has for me anyway.

Thanks again

Well the A3 hardware uses Realtek chipset for gig switch. I know that A4 uses a different chipset. I think the Realtek have been very quick I use their drivers for my Gig Rigs and wireless N cards.

Gig PCI you can raise the FBS to 173MHz to overclock the cards if you needed. I don't my speeds are great! Can say the same for the other chipsets.

Some nuance here: Realtek switches are OK, the NIC though do not have the same performance as Intel Gigabit or Marvell chipset.

If we're talking Switch chipsets, Vitesse.  ;D

Wasn't that in A1, A2, with 96KB switch packet memory buffer,  then dropped in A3, A4 uses what? FCC photo's were fuzzy on A4 PCB. One of the 8-port gig switch uses Vitesse 144KB packet buffer as well as the DLINK gig switches for the home. Realtek uses 832-838KB packet buffers on that chipset in A3.

packet buffer doesn't always mean speed. The Vitesse chip out performs the realtek everytime.

I've got an A2  ;D ;D ;D ;D

More packet buffer can compensate for lack of speed. Perception-wise...

BTW Lycan, how do I become an Insane Member?  ???
Offtopic: do you know when Dlink starts selling those ANT24-0230 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=545)  in Europe? I will pay quadruple when ordering from Europe...I'm a good guy, but the Mrs will kill me
