Hi all,

For some reasons, my internet connection keeps dropping more often recently. My laptop still says it is connected to my network but I can just not have internet connection. It was not like that before but it happened more frequently now. What I did was to power off then on the modem and the router and everything will work fine again. What would be the problem? Anyone has any suggestion? I want to upgrade my firmware but I just wonder if I need to save all the configuration before doing the upgrading? If so, then how can I set it back to the old configuration that was saved? Thanks in advance.

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?
How are you connecting to the 655? Wired or Wireless?
What wireless modes are you running? Mixed? Try Single G mode?
What FW version is currently loaded?
Any cordless phones in the house?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

I have Comcast cable.
- Motorola SB6120
- The modem is wired to the router.
- I am using mixed wireless mode now.
- I am not sure what version of firmware it has now. I will check and post back.
- Yes. We have a cordless phone in the house.

I think I have all the setting just as you suggested but I will double check and post back.

Thanks.

try this and post back and let me know if it worked go into wireless settings then change security mode to wpa-personal then go down to wpa section bellow and make sure it is set

wpa mode -(wpa or wpa2)
cipher mode -AES
GROUP KEY UPDATE INTERVAL-3600

Then make sure you change the pre-shared key  just delete the dots in there and put in a new password that you can remember

then save

some wireless n cards have a problem with tkip cipher mine did so once i set it up this way i have not had it do the same thing you are talking about good luck hope it works

i also have a ps3 and other wiresless and no problems with them at all good luck

I would test with Single mode G at first then try Mixed G and N. Use WPA2 and AES if all of your devices support this.

I would turn off ALL wireless and cordless devices while testing to see if there is any problems seen or not.
Graduate the devices back on while testing.

As for the config question:

If you are using a firmware that is in the same family 1.2x ->1.2x+ or 1.3x -> 1.3x+ the saved config usually works fine, the exception to this was the 1.34 NA -> 1.35NA.

If you are changing families 1.2x ->1.3x then don't use the same config.

The config file is saved on the Tools > System Page through the admin lgon pages.

If after restoring a saved config file you have issues, you can always do a Factory Reset and reconfigure the router manually.

You don't have to save the config if you want to reenter settings manually,  it all depends on how comfortable you are setting the router up and how complicated your setup is.
