DIR 655 and Canon network printer
« on: January 26, 2009, 09:08:10 AM »

I have a canon mp970 on my network, I can reach the config page no problem, but none of my pc's either wired or wireless can print to the printer. I remember discussion of a firmware issue affecting printers, can anyone tell me if this has been resolved or is there a known workaround?

Hi pigsy1974,

Have you installed the Canon mp970 software on all your computers?

Is the Canon plugged directly into the Router, or is it Wireless to the Router?

All issues concerning printer connectivity I've seen on the board were (local) driver installation issues. if you can see it in Shareport, that part at least works.

all of the pc's have the canon drivers and software utilities installed on them.  The printer is connected to a dgs 1005d switch and then up to my router.  The ip on the printer is static and is set on the router.

Check the driver setting as to IP printport etc. (LPR etc)

i have checked all the port settings are correct. The canon network utility cannot identify the printer automatically I needed to specify the ip address in order for the pc's to find the printer

Try giving the printer a DHCP address using the DHCP reservation on the 655.  Also you might want to check that the printer and computers have all the same network workgroup name.  I have a Konica Network printer that I give an address through the reservation method and all my systems see it with no issues.

Hi pigsy1974,

Plug the Canon Printer directly into the Router, not through a switch. Report back.

pigsy74, I have networked Canon MX700 and a MX850 working on my DIR-655 based network, with wired and wireless XP and Vista clients. There are also two Gigabit switches in the network.

I didn't have to make any special adjustments to the DIR-655 to make them work. The printers just have DHCP addresses, not reserved.

The Canon setup is kinda weird.

The first time you set up a networked Canon you MUST have both the Ethernet and USB cables plugged into the printer. Have you done this step?

It's all about the driver setting  ;)

hi all, thanks for the info, i got it sorted, i had updated the firmware on the router, i swapped the port to the ip address and then back to the port the canon utility creates and it sorted it, i guess the canon utility had lost the ip setting.  thanks for all your help.  Just updated to the new beta firmware, seems good so far, just about to check my ps3, with the second (5th Jan) 1.22 i could not connect to my media server, just kept getting a DNLA protocol error 2006.  the 13th jan version of 1.22 worked fine.
