CANNOT ACCESS DNS 323 EXTERNALLY
« on: July 11, 2011, 04:44:10 PM »

I can access my DNS 323 fully on my local network.  I can access it externally through the login screen.  After the login screen it will not connect and display the file contents.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit on one computer, 32 bit on another.

on my local network I enter the local address:  ftp://10.0.1.3:8150 and login and all is well.

When I either enter ftp://my-external-IP:8150 I log in, and after 30 seconds of thinking, I get what should be my file list - "Index of ftp://my-external-IP:8150" but no list of files is displayed under the heading.

If I try and map a network drive as a ftp website, I map ftp://10.0.1.3:8150 and the files pop up instantly.
If I try to map the external address as above, the error message "An error occurred opening the FTP Server.  Make sure you have permission to access that folder.  Details: 200 TYPE is now ASCII; 277 Entering Passive Mode (10,0,0,3,216,244)"

I am using an Airport Extreme as my router, and connecting wirelessly to another airport extreme as an access point.  The DNS-323 and one of the computers are ethernet connected to the "wireless" airport extreme.  The other computer (I get the same results on both) is a laptop wirelessly connected.

My windows firewall is disabled.

Are you saying you are trying to access the DNS-323 from somewhere out on the internet like, for example, a wireless hot spot?

If you are only trying to use it on your internal network why are you trying to use an external IP and not the 10.0.1.3?

OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE DNS-323
« Reply #2 on: July 11, 2011, 04:53:14 PM »

A few more things I haven't been able to figure out.

I was planning to use the DNS-323 to host my local data files so that one file copy could be accessed from any of my home computers.  However, opening a QuickBooks, Excel, or any other data file causes the program to become unresponsive for upwards of 30 seconds.

Now I have resorted to local copies of the data files on the 2 computers I use (Laptop, desktop) and sync them every evening.  When I use the program AJC Sync to sync the files between my computer and the NAS, I will get up to 99% network utilization at 100Mbps.  Fastest I've ever seen my computer move anything.

Since bandwidth isn't the problem, and while transferring sets of files the network utilization drops to 0% between groups of files and then quickly regains 99% in the middle of large sets of files.  I have the drive mapped as a local network drive N:, and use the drive letter to access either individual data files with the computer or for sync'ing files.  It appears there is some issue with opening the connection or something to the NAS ant transferring the data when requested by a program.

This is all really confusing to me.  Not an IT guy, but as an engineer I'm usually pretty good at finding my way around a computer.  This just is beyond my knowledge.

I am using my external address from inside my LAN just for testing purposes.  Easier to see if it work here than driving to work to test it.  Final goal is to be able to access it from any external site that I need to.

Welcome to networking 101.

Your external address is EXTERNAL to your local network and as such your local network knows nothing about it.

To be able to do what you want you must also setup your router to allow access to the NAS from the outside world.  There are a number of posts on the forum detailing how to do this and I will add, be very sure of your security when you do so otherwise you will have world + dog going through your files.

First - do not try to test external access to anything on your LAN from inside the LAN, the results may not be what you expect, and you're going to end up frustrating yourself.

Second - the error messages suggest that you have not correctly configured your router and DNS-323 for passive ftp - you're showing a private ip address (10.0.0.3) where a public address should be (if you're connecting from the internet).

Have you setup port forwarding in the router?  If not, you will not be able to access the NAS externally.  As pointed out in another post, it is best to not test the external configuration from inside your LAN.

Port forwarding seems to work ok.  I from internal, if i put in my external IP and the port :8150 i can log into the DNS but cant see the files.  Using the private IP address and port, it works great.  I just tried accessing it from my work, and the diagnose connection dialog box comes up.  I have an IP cam and can access it with no problems externally.  Its on port :8100.

The question not if port forwarding works - but rather has it been configured correctly for passive ftp.

The error message you gave us indicates you are using passive ftp - passive ftp requires more than one port to be forwarded - have you forwarded the range of ports required for passive ftp.

The error message you gave us indicates you are using passive ftp AND you probably have the DNS-323 configured to return it's internal (private) address - this will cause a problem with external access.
