Author Topic: DIR-655 Stops Responding to the Internet but Modem/Router Lights are Fine  (Read 25390 times)

Greetings,

As of two days ago my DIR-655 seems to have stopped loading webpages every 10-30minutes for periods of up to 5-15 minutes, as in they the reloading icon will constantly be circling and the webpage remains blank, no error or anything until it says failed to load on my web browser (tried multiple browsers such as Safari, Chrome, IE and Firefox). This problem occurs on every computer on my network, laptops (both Mac and PC) and desktops.

When this problem occurs all lights on modem and router seem to be normal no signs of anything going down but I originally thought that this affected wired and wireless but I seem to have narrowed it to culprit being the wireless. When connected to the PC I can browse for an indefinite amount of time without the webpages failing to respond, however when I connected to WiFi through Airport on a Macbook Air my webpages start to begin failing to load around 5-10 minutes of browsing which affects all computers connected to the network (essentially all computers failing to respond to the internet during this outage).

Interestingly when this problem occurs, if I am connected to Skype or Aim it will stay connected and I can still chat with people but I will not be able to sign onto AIM if the problem occurs before I sign on and I try to sign on during the outage. If I am streaming a video from justin.tv or ustream it still continues to stream during this "outage".

I have the revB of the DIR-655 and have tried resetting the modem, turning off the firewall, upgrading firmware to 2.03NA from 2.01NA and setting the MTU to 1400 (default 1500) with nothing helping. I am using Time Warner Wideband ISP and have connected the modem directly to my PC and for the 30minutes or so that I tested the web browsing it seemed fine and did not have any errors. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

a shot in the dark here, but maybe you have a failing LAN card in your network that is flooding crap data onto your LAN, but then resets itself (like a thermal failure that cools off and resets...)

I would try pulling each individual PC/Mac off line for a few hours and see if the rest of the LAN stabilizes....if it is a specific client, your LAN should stabilize almost immediately once the bad pc is shut down....

Is your location near others with wireless nets that could be overpowering yours ?  Or maybe nextdoor is using a microwave every so often that is hammering your signal in an odd way....??

Have you, after updating the firmware, used the reset button to force the router to a fresh state...?Or did you use reset before you re-installed the firmware ?

I am using Time Warner Cable.
Modem has a built in router but I had it turned off and into bridge mode.
My modem is model is: SBG6850

DNS filled out
QoS Off
Advanced DNS off
DNS Relay on
DHCP Reserved IP addresses on
Firewall set to endpoint independent

All of these fixes didn't work alone but when I removed an old Belkin router I was using as an access point, reset the DIR-655 and redid the options things seem to have been stable for about an hour so far. Hoping it stays this way. I will plug the Belkin back in later tonight or tomorrow afternoon and report back if that was the cause of my problems.

Sammydad1, I upgraded my firmware then reset the router and that didn't help but when I removed the Belkin Router Access Point, reset my router and redid the options FurryNutz asked my connection has been stable. And I do not think it was a specific computer that was causing the overload of data as I tested just my PC wired which was fine, my Macbook air connected WiFi by itself and the wired connection which would cause the connection to stop and a Dell PC on wireless + the wired main PC would cause the connection to stop responding as well.

Your original post didnt mention the old Belkin unit as an access point or I think we all would have mentioned removing it first thing....

I run my router in G/N Only mode....old B wireless stuff has its own issues...I would run in N only mode if not for the ipods and iphones here at home that use G only for wifi....8-(

Ah I see sorry to have forgotten to mention it since it's not in the same room as my router so it slipped my mind. Hope that was my issue, thanks!

The Belkin and 655 routers might have been fighting for channels. IF you have 2 wireless routers online, try to change the channels on the Belkin to something far away from what the 655 is on. Or set the 655 router Single modes like N and the Belkin for G if you want to try this.

My problems returned after about 2 hours of stability. I do not have the Belkin router plugged in at all. I've already reset the router and tried to input the settings in again but the internet seems to keep dropping (while maintaining the internet light on).

I would check the ISP Modems log and see if its reporting any connection drops. This might make it look like the router has a problem however sometimes the router is doing it's job and if the modem is dropping the connection then the router will too.

Any other WiFi routers in the near by area?
Might try changing channels.
I would test Single mode G for a while and see if it drops again.
I would try to test with out security if you can and see.
Turn off all wireless devices save for one or the test PC/Laptop.
Use InSSIDer application to see whos around you for wireless and there channels there using.
Any cordless phones in the house or near by?

I would swap cables between the ISP modem and router to be sure. Cat6 is preferred.

Is there a way to check the modem log through the d-link user page? I ask this because Time Warner does not allow users to access the Wideband docsis 3.0 modem. I have tried multiple channels but will give your other suggestions a go. And is it ever advisable set the channel settings to auto?

could try accessing the modem at 192.168.100.1 and see. I recommend getting your own modem. SB6120 is a great modem. You can't access the modem thru the router. Each modem has a local IP address that sometimes you can access. Sometimes not.

You can use auto channel scan however sometimes having other wifi in the area might need to just set manual.

I am having the exact same problem with my DIR-655. Internet would intermittenly disconnect and then come back online again. MSN and ping in CMD would work continuously. Funny thing this applies randomly, sometimes all the computers can't go on the internet (wifi or w/o wifi), sometimes only one of them won't work. Rebooting the router through control panel sometimes fixes the problem. Interestingly I am also using Time Warner but I am in SoCal area.
