Losing connection?
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:35:02 PM »

I'm using the DWA-160 on a laptop connecting the DIR-825.  It always links at 270 mpbs and  the transfer rate wavers from 54 mpbs at the lowest (at the lowest) to upwards of the occasional 300 mbps.  However,  from time to time I hear the sound alert that I would expect when connecting to the network.

Here are some log entries regarding the issue:

[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:27:19 2009 Allowed configuration authentication by IP address 192.168.0.xxx
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:54 2009 2.4GHz Band 'ssid name': Wireless system with MAC address 'xxx' secured and linked
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:49 2009 2.4GHz Band 'ssid name': Wireless system with MAC address 'xxx' associated
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:49 2009 Above message repeated 1 times
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:45 2009 2.4GHz Band 'ssid name': Wireless system with MAC address 'xxx' disconnected for reason: Authentication Failed
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:44 2009 2.4GHz Band 'ssid name': Wireless system with MAC address 'xxx' associated
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:44 2009 Above message repeated 1 times
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:44 2009 2.4GHz Band 'ssid name': Wireless system with MAC address 'xxx'disconnected for reason: Received Deauthentication
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:39 2009 2.4GHz Band 'ssid name': Wireless system with MAC address 'xxx' associated
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:39 2009 Above message repeated 1 times
[INFO] Wed Jan 28 16:26:35 2009 2.4GHz Band 'ssid name': Wireless system with MAC address 'xxx' disconnected for reason: Authentication Failed

Does this log entry mean that the laptop is losing it's connection.  If it is, is there anything I can do? Thanks.

is receiving de-auth because it's not authenticating with router. check to see if it supports the encryption that is currently implimented in the router. get rid of encryption all together and see if you see de-auth messages. If not, then its encryption incompatabilities.

If router is set to use wpa2-AES make sure that your adapter on your lappy also support wpa2-AES. If your using the windows Wireless Zero with no 3rd party client software, make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed.

Also, make sure that you dont have two wlan adapters? both enabled, with one connected propely and the other not configured properly. Sounds silly, but it's what I have now. I have built in g on my laptop, and using wireless a/n card. If my built in one is switch on, it's going to attempt to connect to the network using old settings. :)

You may also want to make sure that in the router, you are not filtering mac addresses.

Thanks for your reply.  I must have a computer virus over the weekend unrelated to this problem but in any case I reformatted the drive, reinstalled Windows XP SP2 then updated to SP3, etc.

I reinstalled the Ralink drivers for the D-Link DWA-160 USB Adapter (Rev. B1) and I chose to use the Ralink configuration utility instead for the Wireless Zero Configuration.  It's supposed to support WPA2-PSK AES

I think when I was having the problems I was using the Wireless Zero Config tool instead.

So far I haven't been disconnected. It only disconnected when the laptop went into some kind of power save mode; which disabled USB power.  I put the power scheme back on Home/Office vs. Portable so it doesn't do that anymore.

I have the Dell 1370 internal Wifi card but have it disabled.

I have static IP set up with DHCP-  IP reservation for the Mac address of the adapter.

Right now, it's working good.
