615 Woes
« on: August 05, 2011, 03:36:45 AM »

First time posting here, just at my wits ends trying to fix this issue im having and hoping someone can help me. I previously had a el cheapo wireless router/modem and that died on me so I replaced it with the 615 and used my spare 504t as the modem. I've had this router for 3 days and I've been troubleshooting for 3 days  :'(

Im using a 504t with stock firmware (can't update it for some reason)
and a DIR615 E4 with 5.10 firmware (i have played with dd wrt a bit with it, but reverted it back to 5.10 until i sort my issues)

Okay my set up is as follows.

Phone line > Splitter > 504T gen2 > DIR615

I have the 504t setup for full bridge mode, and i enter my pppoe details into the 615. with wireless off and just my desktop connected via ethernet everything works perfectly

Then with wireless on but no one connected via wifi, and still with my pc connected by ethernet, everything is still working fantasticly

Now with wireless still on and my pc still connecte by ethernet, i then connect my laptop....

And this is just 5 minutes after connecting to the wireless.
I've tried different laptops, 2 android phones and a psp, and I still get similar results, with 1 connected or all connected it makes no difference, if anything is connected it causes it. And it just gets worse as time goes on, ive seen 30% packet loss and 1200m/s ping last night.

Hope someone can help

Aaron

If anyone needs my setting details I'll happily screenshot em,

Are you testing the wired connection always while the wireless is on or testing the wireless connection? Its not recommended to test wireless connection as they can have external interferences that cause signal quality to drop. This is just the nature of the beast. Always test the wired connection with just one pc online and all applications closed.

Tips:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2 and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.

hi furrynutz, thanks for the reply,

All the test i did above were done with my desktop connected by ethernet and with all applications that could have interfered closed. The only time i connected anything by wifi is for the 3rd pingtest result.

I've changed the settings to what you said.

only thing you told me to do, that im not to sure what values it should be is this

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?

Do you mean these 2?

with everything done as you said except for the DNS one i still get this

That is the result from my desktop connected over ethernet and with 2 laptops connected by wifi on mixed G/N

You can get the Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses from Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Is this test over the wireless or wired?

Again, don't test the connection using the wireless, only test speed and ping times over a WIRED connection.

Was curious, did you test speeds and pings while you had WRT loaded?
This might help narrow the issue down.

If WRT has the same results, I would think maybe the issue could be other devices on the line.

Have you disconnected everything from the router accept the one wired PC to test?
I would turn off WiFi as well and see if you get the same results with the WiFi OFF.
Swap out the LAN cable between the ISP modem and router. Sometimes the cables that come in the box are not the best.

Is the lines coming into the house in good working condition and correctly connected and using little or not line splitters. Having line splitters more than one can cause line signal levels to be lower and introduce line noise.

Yup tested it with wrt loaded and its the same thing.

I've disconnected everything from the 615 and 504 except for my desktop.

With 5.10 firmware or wrt this is what happens -

If i turn wifi off its perfectly fine
If i turn wifi on but devices connected to it at all, its still fine
But as soon as a single device connects to the wifi, it all goes spastic.

This is my second 615 in a week that im currently using.

Yesterday i tested the 504t being the modem/router and with 4 computers connected with cables and its fine. It's back to full bridge mode now.

I had a line test done on the house about 3 weeks ago and its perfectly fine. And I only have 1 line splitter.

Any chance of testing this router at a friends or neighbors place to see if the issue tracks?
How about a different router model or brand?

Yeah I could probably take both unit's to a mates place and see what happens. Only thing i can think of at the moment, is maybe the 504t can't handle it, maybe its on its way out etc. If that's the case I'll probably take the 615 back and get a refund and buy a combo unit.
