Author Topic: Lost a complete folder on the DNS-320 / Some comments & Questions about the unit  (Read 22659 times)

 >:( Omigosh I've lost all my data on Volume_2 on my NAS at work that is set up in standard more.  I was mapping the drive using Windows Explorer on one of my work computers, and it seemed to connect fine, but looking at the contents shows nothing there.  Even logging into the web interface shows 600 GB used, but nothing is visible in the Web File Server application.  Grrrr.... this sucks.

I'm going to try a reboot of the unit and see if it can read the data, but I'm not hopeful.  I bet I'm going to have to try one of those recovery methods to retrieve the information.  Talk about unreliable!  You would not think it is so easier to glitch the unit and then lose everything.  I have two of these DNS-320's, and I have to say that they are not to be trusted for even simple business use as you just can't count on them.  I've never seen a device just decide to lose all access to data like that before.  I'm still on the original firmware, and from the sounds of it the new firmware might not be a huge improvement?

EDIT: Okay, I believe this is what happened.  I had Windows Explorer open and mounted the network Volume_2.  With the directory open showing the folders, I decided that I wanted to disconnect the network drive.  Up popped a warned that I had files open and that disconnection could lose file data.  I clicked okay, and that's when all my folders ended up vanishing.  I'm not 100% that's the cause, but I am pretty certain the file folders were there before this occured.

The ignore existing files checkbox you referenced is akin to an "incremental backup". As a security precaution, it is always advisable to test the behavior of any new backup application prior to using it on live data.

Regarding your missing data, did you try manually creating a network map to your data from within Windows?

Thanks for the reply JL.  After learning the hard way, I now realize what the ignore existing files checkbox does.  I just think that a little warning blurb next to the checkbox might easily avoid frustration.

I didn't manually create the network map, but I'll definitely try that if this happens again.  After doing a shutdown/reboot of the NAS I'm glad to see that my files have magically reappeared without further intervention.  Very weird why it all vanished there just on the one volume!

I'm glad you were able to retrieve your data. So long as you are using a Standard configuration and you routinely backup your data from HDD1 -> to HDD2 you should be okay moving forward.

Hate to bump an old thread... But this issue led me to join the forum  :) I have a 3-month-old case open with D-Link, and a "network engineer" hasn't called me back. It doesn't seem like many people use this feature to back up large volumes of files.

The problem is that the work NAS unit won't allow one to enter the URL into the IP address field.  Maybe I'm out to lunch, but isn't the purpose of using a Dyndns address is to allow remote systems to locate the NAS if the dynamic IP changes?  The remote NAS works fine with backups when I enter the IP address in numerical integer form, but that sort of defeats the purposes of having a dyndns.org address doesn't it?  Am I not quite understanding this correctly?  (BTW I'm not a network IT specialist - just a joe blow end user)

You are absolutely right  :) Two firmware releases later, and we still don't have this feature.

I am disappointed, D-link :-/ I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but as a consumer, I shouldn't have to spend this much time getting an answer to why a "written on the box" type of feature doesn't work. This feature is the reason why I bought two of these NASes. I wanted a complete, weekly backup between work and home. That hasn't happened yet.
