So what is the deal with all the bad reviews from customers?
« on: August 12, 2011, 03:02:25 PM »

Well I just purchased this DGL-4500 router since a couple of my XBL friends recomended it.  I noticed there seems to be a quite a few bad reviews on Amazon, Cnet, etc with lag issues and the router being slow.
I plan on using the gamefuel guide posted by furrynutz (did i just say furrynutz? lol) if I have any issues and go from there.
Anyway, what is the best firmware for XBL for 2 Xbox's, open NAT's?
Also anyone notice any faster internet speeds (less lag) from going from a linksys WRT54G or comparable router to this router?

Thanks!

Because they didn't come here to ask for help on setting it up correctly. They there is additional settings that needs to be set up properly out of the box.

What is the current loaded FW.
It it works, keep what is loaded. Do not update. If it works, don't fix it!

I have 2 of these routers and both work great.

Thank furry, I did a search and I noticed you kept mentioning you wanted to update the game fuel priority settings, has the sticky been updated for this? I think it still says to put xbox 1 to priority 1 and xbox 2 to priority 2.  Is this still the case for running two xbox's simultaneously when playing COD on XBL? I dont want to give all the bandwith to one xbox...

Thanks again for your time and support on here!

I would like to add that the majority of people that buy routers don't have a clue what they are actually buying. Its the Brawndo reaction (ever see Idiocracy?) because basically they see a shiny router and they think just buying a new router and attaching it to their system it will cure all their woes. In reality, any router is just a tool. And a tool is only as good as the person using it. I read though some of the forums and reviews and just face palm.  This isn't to insult you ofcourse, just wanted to share my experiences. That's why its more important to read the reviews, not just assume devices that get good, or bad, reviews are good, or bad.

Hello, and new to these forums and a new owner of the DLG4500. I just bought the DLG4500 with Firmware Version :1.23NA,  already installed. Followed FurryNutz's sticky on the xbox360 hook up and everything was fine and running beautifully within seconds of set up. I have 2 pc's, 2 xbox's, 1 laptop, 1 network drive, 1 network printer and a wireless link (connected to a DLINK gigabit SWITCH) connected to this thing (all powered on for an initial test) and this thing preformed better than I expected. I LOVE IT!

Thanks FurryNuts, you sticky was very helpful!

XS and RocNRolla, welcome to the forum!

Furry, Harry, Chris and JavaLawyer are our resident Gurus.  These guys are rock solid in their advice and know not only this router but networking like the back of their hands.

As far as the 4500 having bad reviews.  The router is what, 4 year old technology and still retails for around $180 new.  There's something about this that should peak your curiosity.

And as Furry and Harry said, it's ALL about correct configuration.  Once you get yours tweaked like in the stickies you'll be amazed at the reliability and performance.

That's a very good point. The router's wireless radio is starting to look long in the tooth. I myself almost bought my friend a different router because it offered things like dual simultaneous bands, guest wifi, and the new faster connection rates. On the other hand, their is a flip side to it's age. D-link has had time to work out alot of the bugs we saw with earlier firmware, giving us a pretty stable firmware. Also, it's processor has built in memory. which allows it to process data with a little more snap then some other brands, though other units by Dlink use the same processor, so it's nothing THAT special. To be honest the main reason I went with this router again is because I know it so well so it's easier to troubleshoot remotely. But when I did buy it, I found it on sale on newegg for 85$, so thats a pretty good deal for what your getting.

I think for my next router I am going to go Asus or Buffelo with dd-wrt. I really want to jump in head first into 3rd party firmware because I haven't much experience with it, and there is no excuse for that for a nerd like me :-)

Thanks Kargo, yeah after I ordered this from newegg I saw some professional reviews dated from 2007 :o and I OMG this router is 5 years old??? Is it even worth buying in 2011? but my friends highly recommended it, so I said what the heck and ordered one up.

I will be going from DSL to cable and will be connecting it a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.  I hope I wont be lagging so much in Black ops with this new set up. I am tired of putting 6 bullets in a guy only to get killed with two, lol.

Thanks again guys, I am sure I will have some question when I try to get everything set up later this week.

Yes, The gamefuel sticky has been updated to reflect experiences with multiple xbox installations. A buddy of mine has 3 and another has 2 that we've played on and all works great.

The priorities and rules are set up to give priorities to all consoles connecting to the port numbers vs individual xboxes. This give pretty much equal bandwidth to each box in the IP range. It's not recommended to give one xbox more than another.

I'll be honest with you guys.  I bought the DIR-657 and I can't notice any difference in speed or performance over my 4500.  Like Harry (and most of you) the nerd in me wanted to try it out.  It's got some quirks, one of which I found last night after about 2 weeks of good, reliable performance.  It lost internet connection although I could still connect and fiddle with the UI, thank goodness.

Ultimately, I had to do a factory reset and used the setup CD to configure everything.  So far it's been stable again.  Initially, the setup CD would hang on the last step and give me an error.  This time, it worked all the way through.

That being said, I think what Harry said about the 4500 being known to have now....dare I say....incredibly stable firmware and a wealth of guys here who know it inside and out, and it really makes a difference when you have people who can help you configure your router and tweak it to your needs.  One can have a state-of-the-art, new router but if it's not configured right, it can be unstable and quirky as any other.

Well right now I have the DGL-4500 set up with the default settings,  so far all Xbox's have open NAT's.  Are there any tweaks to make the PC run faster/better or have lower pings that is not already included in the sticky?

At peak times my jitter and ping times jumps up 10 ms.

Yes, I am pretty sure all the options are set to what the sticky indicates, the only thing I have not done yet is add a rule for each Xbox and set up a static IP for each X-box.
I am just trying to get my pings better and jitter more stable at peak times.  This is the first time I used cable for broadband so maybe the jitter is the nature of the beast.
