Is my download speed where it should be?
« on: August 13, 2011, 03:51:02 PM »

Hey all, I just purchased a D-Link DIR-655 to replace my old DIR-615 model as I upgraded my internet from 12Mb/s to 24Mb/s. I was able to install the router effortlessly, but as I ran a speed test, I was very disappointed in the results.

With a wired connection, my new internet package clocks in with a download speed of 7.36Mb/s and upload speed of 1Mb/s. I get the exact numbers using Wi-Fi on my laptop upstairs (which was surprising to me).

I understand that ISPs usually inflate their numbers, but I just wanted to make sure. Is it normal to only get 1/3 of the advertised connection speed or should I make some calls?

Thanks in advance.

Try to disable QoS and test.

Didn't make a difference when I turned off the QoS engine.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Mmmmmm, yummy Copy pasta.  :D :D :D I kid, I kid.  Its a good starting point and you help like..a couple hundred people a day? LOL

Anyway, first thing I would do is bypass the router and see what speeds your getting. It's quite possible your modem hasn't downloaded the new configuration file(the thing that tells your modem to go faster). It's usually done automatically when you upgrade your service, but if the provisioning (computers in your ISP that tell your modem things about your internet account) is busy when you upgrade, it might not do it naturally until the next maintenance cycle (think roll call for your neiborhood's modems).  Or it may have reset after getting the new file, but locked onto a bad channel ID. Think walke talke, and your on a bad channel. You need to reboot your modem for it to rescan to find a better one.

What HW version is your router?

Hardware Version: B1

What FW version is currently loaded?

Firmware Version: 2.00NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?

I have Rogers Hi-Speed Internet, I'm using the Extreme package. It's cable internet.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

I have a SMC Networks SMCD3GN-RRR modem that I got from Rogers when I upgraded. It has a built in router, but I have disabled the wireless capabilities on it and it's in bridge mode.

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

See above.

I did all the other steps, thanks for the help so far.

Quick question though; does disabling the QoS Engine make your gaming experience laggier?

QoS will help it out however you need to configure it. Only part of QoS is enable out of the box. Getting it set up fully, review the gaming and gamefuel stickys on the DGL-4500 forum for this.
To be sure your ISP modem is in bridged mode, are you getting a 192.168 or a ##.##.###.### address on the 655 router under Status/Device Info/Wan section?

Any chance of testing a stand alone cable modem like a Motorola SB6120?

I'm getting a 192.168 address under the Wan section, and sorry, there's no chance of testing a stand alone cable modem.

I still say bypass the DIR-655 and see where we stand. But JMHO

I plugged my Ethernet cable directly into my modem's LAN port and did a speed test...

My download speed clocked in at 49.66Mb/s (lol wut) and my upload speed clocked in at 1Mb/s. I don't know how I got up to that speed though, I'm only paying for 24Mb/s (not complaining).  :o

I'm going to try fiddling around with my router and see if I can get my Wi-Fi going faster, but I think I might just leave my computer plugged directly into the modem, lol.

EDIT:

Just did a couple more speed tests just to see if the previous result was a fluke:

Try #2 - 13.19Mb/s DL, 1Mb/s UL
Try #3 - 12.75Mb/s DL, 1Mb/s UL
Try #4 - 32.35Mb/s DL, 1.01Mb/s UL
Try #5 - 34.24Mb/s DL, 1Mb/s UL

So the results were really inconsistent, but the speed of the internet was a lot faster than it was with the router.

Yea, but atleast now know you don't need to worry about improving the throughput of the upload. So that rules alot of the gamefuel. If you reconnect the router, and do some more tests, whats your speed with the router on? Remeber, speeds can change but 50-100% in a matter of hours.

With router on:

Try #1 - 7.43Mb/s DL, 0.98Mb/s UL
Try #2 - 7.43Mb/s DL, 0.99Mb/s UL
Try #3 - 7.47Mb/s DL, 0.99Mb/s UL
Try #4 - 7.38Mb/s DL, 0.99Mb/s UL
Try #5 - 7.48Mb/s DL, 0.99Mb/s UL

Definitely a lot slower with the router connected.

What this test over wired with WiFi and QoS options ALL off?
Try swapping cables between Modem and router and only one test PC? Sometimes cabling isn't the best from some Mfrs that they include with some devices. I recommend Cat 6 or 5e minimum.
Do a factory reset on the router and test again.

What is the max. connection speed on the LAN port comming from the ISP Modem? 100? Some newer ones support 1Gb connections. Might try and set the WAN port speed on the router to 100 or 1000 if the modem supports Gb.

Possible that you might try a FW update after all this.
