wireless n keeps dropping but g seems fine
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:37:20 PM »

my isp is ATT running a Speedstream 4100 DSL modem(not a router)
ver:B1 FW 2.00na
there are two desktops(w7), a Samsung TV and Directv using ethernet
two android phones using G
and 1 laptop(w7) running N and the n keeps dropping and reconnecting
everything else seems fine
I read on the forum the problem could be with WPA so I hid my ssid and set wireless security mode to none(I know not a good idea) so far it seems to work.
There must be a better way.
Oh, on the laptop I deleted the previous connection and re-added it using WPS, before turning off security, still had problems.
WPS is still enabled but does it do anything with security off?
why does n seem to be the only one with problems?

Try mixed G and N only instead of mixed all.
Preferred is WPA personal and Cipher type to AES only if your devices support this.

now it is more consistent g also drops out and reconnects

I had a D-link router before and it worked flawlessly and still does(I gave it away), this one is confusing.
So back it goes

What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

I am using wpa-personal and AES(as per your previous post)
No cordless phones, and yes all the neighbors have wifi.

anyway N seems stable and I was able to fix the problem with G using an android app.
I have till the 11th of Sept to return the router I am going to see how this works out, hopefully it will.

Back to the android app, my previous router had no problems staying connected to the phone but this one has an issue, that hopefully is resolved with the app.

also called tech support and she suggested changing the channel, that didn't help.

Any of the Wifi routers near by? I would use InSSIDer app to see whos around and what channels they are using and change to one thats not being used. There could be other external interferences around you that can cause the drops. Anything in the routers logs regarding this? Does it only happen with wireless or does wired drop too?

Wired never drops it is just wireless.
I have downloaded InSSIDer but haven't used it yet, my desktop doesn't have wifi.
The plan is to do as you say and check for a channel that is not being used.
Where I live the lots are 1+ acres each so we are not exactly on top of each other, but one of the neighbors has a serious wifi set up. I can pickup all bars everywhere on my property from his network.
I don't know what he is using but that's what I should be doing.
And about the logs, I need to set the date ::)

As a temp test, what happens if you use Single mode G with no security temp, will the phone access the web?

Keep us posted. Maybe someone can review your router settings using teamviewer.com.

I used InSSIDer and it only shows my network from inside the house.
Sooo I download Wifi Analyzer from the android market and walking around outside the house(hard to do with a laptop) I find lots of Wifi networks and what channel they are on, what type of encryption...
Good news I am the only one on channel 11.

The network has be stable since yesterday and tomorrow my DIR601 should arrive so I am going to give this a shot
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0

So if I run into issues should I post them here or in DIR-601?
Thx
