Cannot see wireless device from win7 explorer
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:33:53 AM »

Please help;

My Samsung phone is working as it should as an USB device (using KEIS and such). However though it receives ip address from DIR-655 router and is registered by MAC address in router - also possible to ping its IP from windows I cannot see it in /Network from my WIN7 64bit OS? The desktop comp is wired to the router, phone is on wireless.

I ve tried several settings and almost had it. It did work some months ago...

From log;
"SSID": Wireless system with MAC address XXXXXX  secured and linked" (That is my mobile phone)

Thanks

Mem

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Wait..what exactly are you try to do? You using the phone as a USB device? Like as in a tethered modem? Or a storage device? And your trying to network your phone to other computers? Or other computers to the computer tethered to the phone?

First of all; Thanks!

Hardware Version: A3
Product Page: DIR-655
Firmware Version: 1.31EU
ISP: Cable 100/10
Stand alone "hub" connected then to router D-LINK dir-655, ISP own brand.
No built in router in "modem"... must check (but this thing Im trying to do did work... some weeks ago)

DNS - checked
QoS - disabled
Advanced DNS - disabled
Reserved DHCP - checked
Auto optain ip - they are recieving ip from the same "scope"
Endpoint independent - ok
Both G and N - both settings work as wireless modes.. but phone wont show in explorer, win

WPA personal, AUTO, TPIK and AES...

Only "connected" is a Samsung Mobile S2 phone that connects but wontīt show or ... cannot reach primary for Spotifyuse.

No cordless phones
Yes there are other WIFIs - a lot probably...

AV accepts (Norton) the phone as credible device but of course I will try that also.

Strange cause it did work a couple of weeks, ago...

Thanks and if you have any more input I surely need them :) please...

And... what Im trying to do... is to connect the phone as a wireless device to the router DIR-655 and the computer as a wired device. Then browse to the phone (set as a mass storage in settings) or use SPOTIFY to synch music. Problem is that KIES wont find the phone as well as explorer (as a mass storage) or Spotify (the main reason for trying this). And... it did work some weeks ago.

Under the routers web page, look under Advanced/Advanced Wireless and see if WLAN Partition is enabled? Should be disabled.
Also go ahead and disable Short GI while your there. Save settings.

Might refer to the MFR of the phone or the SW to see if there is any extra help or info they recommend when connecting through routers...

Sadly even with those settings it wonīt work. Problem or the stupid thing in my opinion is that the phone receives an IP and is connected 100% signal strength in router interface.... But it wont show up anywhere - - - thanks a lot again -

I have tried also Samsung / Android forums but no response so far. Probably a windows thingy again but I cannot find out what... please add anything that could be useful - Im getting...

The phone says connected, states ip adress and everything looks fine in phone and in router... Must be a windows problem... but what? Even a static ip wonīt work (on phone).

Thanks!

How are you trying to connect to the phone in explorer? FTP? HTTP? How does the MFR say your supposed to connect to it using Explorer? Can run a ping to the phones IP address from the command line and see if you get a response.

As it did work .. I only set the phone to "mass storage" - as such a device in settings on phone. Then it should and did show up as a storage unit (like USB). Same settings on phone when connecting to Spotify - another setting for Samsung Kies application. All three types work when physically connected with USB cable.

But wireless :)  ??? ::)

I give up for tonight .....................

Now I have tried another computer and it wont work there either (other security programs and so forth). Do I need to change my router to a dir-655 to an AP (access point) to be able to connect the wired computer to wireless device ...? Im sure this thing worked a while ago. Ive also reset the router with no luck.

Main issue, short version;

BY USB cable the wireless device (Samsung phone) works in every way.

BY Wireless (through router) it receives an IP, says connected in router interface but cannot connect to windows7 64 bit...? Or cannot connect to programs like Spotify.

No, I don't think its possible what your trying to do. When you have the phone wired via USB, it's going through the network standards of the PC. When it's connected wifi, there is no specific protocal for file sharing in it's connection stack. It would like connecting a blu ray player via wifi and trying to stream it over the wireless connection to a PC. It's just isn't designed to do it. Do you have reports of others doing it?

Well... itīs not streaming... exactly. But what you say is kind of my own opinion, from the start, though; (!)

Yes I know several people not with Samsung, D-Link though (HTC in that case). And also I think this worked before summer without any fuss so I did not notice or thought that much of it. Samsung on wireless have a setting (mass storage device) and it should then popup in explorer as such a device. Probably need to buy a proper NIC and connect directly to phone if this continues...

Could be something as simple as your Windows firewall blocking access to the device.
Do you have Network Discovery turned on in Advanced Sharing on the Computer?
Is your Computer set up to be in a "HomeGroup"?  If it is, leave the homegroup and see if that changes anything.

If the phone is getting an IP address then the issue may not be with the router at all, but with a setting on the computer.

If it works on USB, I would just use it that way.

I thank all that have answered   :)

Windows firewall is off. Handled by Norton that accepts phone. Also shut-down all security programs, with no luck, same result.

yes, network discovery is on. Home-group have tried both connected to and removed.

Have to agree, now, something with the computer settings - but what? And it did work...

Sadly Spotify wonīt synch through USB (and other such problems...)

Please suggest more if you have any A N Y ideas :)

Any chance you have a friend or buddy or neighbor that you can take your phone and SW to and see if you can install it on a different PC and or OS, try to find someone with XP maybe to see if there PC and network set up will work?
