Problems updating firmware
« on: August 26, 2011, 02:52:24 PM »

When I try to d/l the latest firmware from the d-link support site for some reason the d/l will not start, and when trying to update from within the routers management page I get this error.

UPLOAD FAILED
The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this Gateway, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.

If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the gateway may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a "user" instead of an "admin" - only administrators can upload new firmware.

The Gateway will not be reprogrammed.

I am currently using 2.02NA. I tried to call customer service and was actually told not to upgrade the firmware to the latest if I was not having any issues with the router. When I asked the customer service rep "And if I was having issues the first thing that you would be asking me is if I had the latest firmware d/l and installed right? he could only laugh.

Any help that anyone could be able to provide me would be greatly appreciated.

If theres is a problem, please let us help you. Give us the details.

I finally figured out how to d/l the firmware and have upgraded to 2.06NA. No problems at all just confused as to why cust. support reps advise against upgrading your router to the latest firmware. Eh. it works. That's all that really matters.

Because 99% of the time FW will not fix router problems initially and having some experience in testing and helping people, the real problems need to be identified first before trying to apply FW updates. In most cases FW updates are minor feature additions or fixes for behind the scene operations of the router that in most part DON'T impact daily operation or will fix any user problems on the router. It may in some case make the problem worse and make it hard on those of us who are trying to help others, find the problem. Then we waste time and effort in some cases.

Sorry that if you feel that my posting "IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT!" bothers you, however were trying to help others find the real problems with there routers and or else where since routers are always the first point that everyone looks at as the culprit and in most cases, is not. Problems lie else where. Were here to help identify where the problem is and to see if it can be fixed with out FW updates. After all troubleshooting as been exhausted, then by all means, FW updates is the next best thing. However it's still not guaranteed to fix the problem. I'm not here to tell you that you can and can't do to the router. These are your devices, you can do what you please to them. Just here to try and help everyone as much as possible fix the problems at hand and maybe make suggestions so that they have a better experience with there devices and the router for those who ask.

If by me doing this really annoys you then please feel free to skip over reading my posts or feel free to move to a different forum.

Have a great day.

I agree with FurryNutz. Routers can be VERY finicky devices. Once they're working properly, don't touch anything, else you're inviting trouble.

When it comes to routers, stable connectivity trumps additional functionality.  As FurryNutz aptly pointed out, added functionality (as far as the end user is concerned) is typically a minor or trivial improvement at best.
