DIR-655 Lost Connection Solved - v1.35
« on: August 30, 2011, 08:03:08 PM »

Well...I know there are a lot of threads out there regarding connection issues, both with wireless & LAN connections, after updating firmware to 1.35.  To provide a snapshot of my setup...I have 3 GB switches throughout my home, a couple Ethernet enabled Blu-Ray players, 2 XBOX 360's, multiple satellite receivers with Ethernet, 5 PC's, 3 iphones, etc...you get the picture.  I also have 5 older DLink wi-fi cameras.  So, with this said my setup has been flawless for some time.  However, a week or so ago I upgraded my firmware on my DIR-655 to the latest version...everything still seemed fine at the time.  Yesterday I noticed we had no wireless internet so I went and checked.  Sure enough...no connectivity on my desktop that's directly linked to the router, etc.

I tried rebooting & then resetting the router...got connectivity, but as soon as I plugged my PC into the switch...no IP address.  I played around with settings, wiring configurations, etc...I'm pretty up to speed on this setup so I felt I exhausted every option.  I thought my router went bad...gave me an excuse to go get the latest so I brought home a NetGear N750...hooked it up.  As soon as I changed the LAN IP address range to condense the #of IP addresses I'm giving out again, the LAN connection to the PC was lost...I could not get it restored.  I finally got it working, bypassing the GB switch, but the wireless would lose connection literally after a few seconds.

I ended up taking the NetGear router back and bought the exact same DIR-655, but this time it was HW version B1 instead of A and it was firmware #2.00 or something like that.  I hooked it up when I got home...configured the system to exactly the way I had it before and PRESTO!!!  My system is working like it was before.  I can only think that the firmware upgrade I made on the previous router screwed something up in my system.  Anyway, it didn't sound like there was a way to revert back to previous firmware versions, but I'm sure there is  If you're having issues like mine I would strongly recommend buying a new one and leaving the old one in the dust!  I hope this helps you as I was pulling my hair out trying to figure things out.

How did you do the FW upgrade on the other 655?
Did you do a factory reset after the FW update?
Did you configure the router manually from scratch or load a saved config file.

Recommended FW update process:
1. Factory reset.
2. Update FW.
3. Factory reset once more.
4. Manually set up router from scratch.
5. Sometimes skipping step 4 and loading the saved config file should work if no problems are seen after the save config file has loaded.

Thanks for the reply.  I did not do a factory reset prior to the FW upgrade.  After the upgrade the unit was reset and I manually began configuring based on the previous setup.  In my system I had changed the default 192.168.0.1 extension to .135.1...I guess just to be different.  Since my cameras were set up with static IP addresses with that default I needed to change the router.  As soon as I would make that change under the LAN settings and the router would reboot...nothing.  No connection to the router.  I finally tried just keeping the router's default settings in regards to IP addresses and I was able to connect on other PC's in the house, but all would lose connectivity sporadically...every few minutes...LAN & wireless clients.

Guess I was just frustrated to the point of replacement, but perhaps there was a way to get it working.  Just a weird experience.

Some tips for next time:
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

You may have just given yourself the "green weenie."  The A series passes router effectiveness tests and the B version seems not to pass.  TEST your router at one of the reputable Router Test internet sites.  If a router routinely does not block unwanted chatter, it is useless as a firewall.  I have heard that the B version of the 655 does not block effectively.  Maybe yours does...but, test it!

One, of many, such sites is www.hackerwatch.org/probe
or
