Mac Users: Speed of File Transfers?
« on: August 31, 2011, 07:20:16 AM »

Hi everybody - I have a DNS-323 setup as a video server and backup for the windows machines in my house.  I have a separate Time Capsule for the macs.  However, as I have read elsewhere, I find that smb file transfers and navigation from macs on the to/from the DNS-323 are very slow.  I have a gigabit network running at gigabit speed.  Do other people experience this and, if so, have you found any fix?  I have two 2TB Seagate drives mirrored.  I was wondering whether or not disabling RAID and just using all 4TB would speed things up at all.  I appreciate any feedback or ideas!

Forgot to mention:  The file transfer issue exists with both snow leopard and lion.

Mentioning what speeds you are getting will help determine if you are really getting slow speeds or just what you think are slow.  For instance believing that you since you have a gigabit network the DNS-323 should transfer data at gigabit speeds is not correct.  I don't have a Mac this is just a comment that you can't expect to tell if you are slow or not if you have no idea of what speeds you have.

BTW I have not heard of what disk configuration you use to influence the speeds of the transfers, because the bottlenecks in the DNS-323 are not the hard drives.

Hi Chris - when transfer files by FTP I am getting twice the speed than by SMB transfers.  SMB transfers have actually timed out when I have been transferring 30+GB file libraries.  I am getting Gigabit speeds via FTP but awful speeds by SMB.  Sorry I can't quote the numbers themselves as I am on the road right now and not at the computer.  You primarily answered my question that the hard drive configuration should not affect speed of network file transfers.  Thanks,

You also do not mention the purpose of the transfers from the OS X machines to the DNS-323.

In my environment the DNS-323 is used for backups; I use a Mac and the wife uses a Win 7 machine.  The transfer speeds were never great on either machine over our wired gigabit network.  I solved my Mac backup problems by switching to SuperDuper!  A bootable backup now takes about 11 minutes to one of the disks in Standard format.  As a result of the speed, I am now doing two backups, first to Volume_1 and then to Volume_2.

Hope this helps.

Well in that one statement you just proved that the hard drive configuration doesn't matter, because the only thing that changed is the protocol to do the transfer.

Past that I can't really help because I'm on Windows 7 only.  I don't transfer really big files either, but I have not seen any errors, and I get about 18.5675 MBytes/Sec through SMB.  This is on a non-tweaked DNS-323 as in I don't have a router that can handle jumbo frames so I don't use them.  Of course I can say that since it can do this for the Windows 7, it should be able to do it for the Mac unless there is something where the two can't properly agree on how to transfer over SMB.

If no one gives you an answer here you might want to try to search and ask the question here:

Google Mac or OSX & SMB - you'll probably find many hits complaining of slow transfers, I've seen posts to this forum on it - I think it relates to the SAMBA daemon on OSX

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Thanks - I am well aware that it is an issue but was wondering primarily whether any difference could be made by not mirroring the drives.  I have tried some of the fixes to speed up smb file transfers with marginal improvement.  Also wondered whether any mac user had found some other fix that was specific to interoperability with the DNS323.  Thanks again all,
