Issues with 825B1 and BlackArmor NAS 220 - frustrated
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:34:57 AM »

It seems the 825 works pretty well but I definitely run into issues with my NAS.  Takes a long time to access it via Windows Explorer or when trying to run videos from the NAS it seems to hang and if the video finally runs it stops/starts and is very erratic.  When I take the 825 out of the equation then all is fine.  BUMMER!  Wanted to get some opinions on a thought to fix this issue.

Does it make sense to do a reset (hold in reset button until power light flashes) and then update to 2.06.  Looks like 2.06 is getting positive feedback.  Been running 2.05 for some time now but I all too often have issues accessing and running anything from the NAS when it's connected to the router.

Thoughts?  Ideas?  Thanks!

Have you tried using a external switch off of the 825 then connect all other wired devices to the switch? It's preferred to have an external switch in these cases as it eliminates any router processing and allows for a more direct and speedier connection between devices. I use a 24pt Gb switch off mine router. I only connect devices that don't need to be connected with any other devices and needs router processing, like xbox. Those are direct to the router for gaming online.

LOL.  I think you and I had this chat before.  And it is the thing to do.  I guess it pisses me off that this router cannot handle this properly and it should.  I don't even use these things that much.  But, after connecting my switch (gig ports) and segmenting off the NAS and my desktop I can see the immediate improvement.  My laptop and Boxee Box will have to go through the 825 via WiFi and then the switch to hit the NAS and hopefully that will work fine.  After an initial test it seems to work great which is odd. Sounds like the WiFi works better than the LAN ports. ??

Edit: as a matter of fact I can watch a movie at my desktop (via the NAS) AND on my laptop (via WiFi to the NAS) at the same time and move around in either movie with no lag or issues.

The Boxee Box seems to do just fine via WiFi although I will say I've had to reboot the 825 a couple of times and then it works fine.  Typically there have been no issues for the most part.  One test was a 1080P movie streamed via WiFi through the Boxee Box via the 825 from Hulu and it was just fine.

You have any thoughts on the ASUS RT-N56U (good info here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/31436-asus-rt-n56u-black-diamond-dual-band-gigabit-wireless-n-router-reviewed).  Speeds look amazing and more importantly it looks to have great throughput.

Ya I Think we did. Finally got the switch in place now huh?
Ya, I figured the switch would clear things up a bit for you.

I still need to see if my boxee will do well for Wifi. What radio are you using 2.4Ghz or 5?
It's possible that WiFi is working better then LAN ports. However keep in mind that wired connections can be effected by cable length and quality. I had been using cat5e however did jump to all new CAT 6.
I have everything connected to my switch accept for the xboxes. Enjoy it all.
I stream BD files from my server thru the boxee.

From experiences with these routers and heading to test a Linksys here soon, seems that the LAN Ports or the switches on the back of routers always seems to be effected by the routers processing and such. I believe the switch on these routers aren't meant to handle xfer speeds as seen when you use a REAL smart(er) external switch do the router having to mange and handle traffic coming across them. Thus why I've just made it a habit to have an external switch along with the router for those installations and platforms that need it.

No experience on the ASUS as of yet. I also prefer routers with antennae or the ability to connect an external antenna. Been testing out the DIR 657 and headed to Linksys that someone sent me to check out. I'm hoping for a DAP-1525 too. I'm very happy with the DGL-4500 and the DIR-825. Once my home addition is done, the 825 is going to be the main router and the 4500 for back up. I hope.  ::)

Yep... switch is in place.  It's a TRENDnet TEG-S80g.  Been playing with it and can start multiple movies from the NAS simultaneously without issue and reposition the play point in the movie as well without any lag.  Amazing.

The Boxee Box is only 2.4.  Odd that there are dual band routers and with the intention of using 5Ghz for multimedia but then the toys I see don't have the 5Ghz.  So I'm using 2.4 for the Boxee and 5 for my laptop.

Did you see a clear improvement by moving to Cat6?  I had thought I had cleared up my problems by moving from some Cat5 to Cat5e cables.  But then issues seem to have come back.  I'm still using Cat5e now but with the switch in place, of course.

If I were you I consider that Asus router.  I know the antennas are internal but at least the router stands vertical. The tests at SmallNetBuilder looked great and it earned the top spot for WiFi routers and still holds that position.

I thought about a DAP-1525 for my Blu-ray as it's Ethernet only.  But with the Boxee Box now I don't see myself using it much anymore.  But nice to get rid of that Ethernet cable I have dropped over my loft.  Not much is exposed but to me it's a nuisance.

I would say I noticed a good improvement when CAT6 was put in place. Longer distances seem very stable for xfers and over all the stability is great. Also knowing that there is a bit of overhead that CAT6 has over 5e is nice. Just seems that everything is very stable on CAT6.

If wireless is running well for then enjoy it man. Enjoy.

I assume you are using UTP and not STP for your CAT6.

Okay..something doesn't make sense.  Wondering if the NAS is the issue.  Even though the NAS is segmented along with my desktop through the switch by speeds are back to slow again.  Maybe 8.5MB average.  Should be at least 15MB if not higher.  Ugh!

What happens if you manually set up static IP reservation on the PC and NAS, connect only those 2 items up to the switch, then do some file xfer testing and see if you notice anything? I do this kind of testing sometimes at work to help Isolate the main LAN and WAN from devices I'm testing.

Hey, I was curious, while you had ur boxee online and watching movies, were you using it to stream video from the internet or were you also watching movies from like a server at your place? Was curious. I notice that if I put movies on my server, i.e. BD movies, the boxee keep re-buffering while using N only 2.4Ghz wireless. Netflix and other internet works great. I presume it's the High data that the boxee has to deal with over wireless vs wired. Wired works great. Too bad the Boxee doesn't have 5Ghz support.  :(

Seagate says to keep the IP dynamic as the speeds will actually be better.  But, in any case I've tried these things and no luck.  Odd thing is back when you I exchanged info before I had to swap out cables and noticed a worthwhile improvement.  Then I started having issues again.  So I added in the switch just recently and that seem to take care of the problem. Suddenly I'm back to square one yet again.  I can't even open one movie and it takes forever to load. Just the other day after adding the gigabit switch and segmenting that portion of the LAN I was able to open four movies or so immediately and run them all and without issue (notes above for details).  Haven't made any changes and had family in town recently so barely touched the PC.  ???

Makes no sense really that we can get dual band routers with the idea of putting multimedia (even displayed on the retail boxes) on 5Ghz and then these devices use 2.4Ghz.

I've found the same  thing as you actually.  I find that streaming over the web works better than from my NAS typically.  Overall all seems to work pretty well however and I'm doing it all via WiFi at 2.4Ghz.  I'd like to know what connection speed the Boxee Box actually connects at to the WiFi router via the 2.4Ghz.  I know it's 802.11n but no idea of the actual speeds it's connecting or maintaining.  There is Boxee app that you can do download speeds via the web.  This can help.

Not sure what version of f/w you are using on your Boxee.  I bought mine in... March I think and they've had 3 or 4 updates since.

So is the new Gb switch now exhibiting the same slow down on the NAS?

There a link to this boxee app? I should have looked at the Status page on the router to see if there was some info on the connection. I only noticed that BD files seem to have a hard time playing seamlessly on 2.4Ghz then wired. Would be interesting to see the actual connection speed. I presume it should be connecting at 130-170Mb on N right?  Ya, Theres been a few updates for boxee.
