Slow Wired Speed
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:27:46 PM »

Hey everyone. I just recently bought this router (DIR-615 rev E3) to act as a Access Point for the dead wifi spot in my room downstairs. I set up everything properly (Turned off DCHP, set ports and gateway..subnet blah blah) and it was working fine. My wireless speeds were perfect, and had no issues with that. However, my wired speed was significantly slowed down. I have Verizon Fios and have the wire from that plugged in to LAN port 1 on my DIR-615. I have another wire going from Port 2 to the back of my PC. My normal speeds are about 30mbps down and 25mbps up. When I connect my internet through the second router (DIR-615) I get a maximum of about 3.0mbps up and down, doesn't go much higher than that. The wireless however, gives me about 11mbps both ways, which is fine.

I thought it might have been a firmware issue so I flashed to DD-WRT (build 15778), but the problem persists. I've tried most everything and am getting desperate. There's absolutely no logical  reasoning for the slowdown.  ???

I have confirmed it's a router issue because I also turned off wireless on my laptop and plugged that directly into the router instead of my desktop and get the same 3mbps crappiness.

Anyone have anything similiar.?

Have you turned off SPI, Firewall and all QoS options on the AP? You can turn off just about everything on the AP router. No ports or forwarding are needed. Settings a reserved IP address on the host router might be recommended as well. The only thing you need is the router IP address and gateway. Other than this, should work well.

How about swapping cables with a different one to be sure cabling is good.

Yes, I've disabled all those above features. I just tried a new cable, same thing.  :-[

You had you have 2 615s? One is a router and the other is set up for AP?
What happens if you swap routers and test the 2nd one as the host with out the other on, does this 2nd 615 behave the same or does it work fast?

Trying to narrow down where the slow down is occurring at.

Any 3rd party firewalls or AV enabled on the PC?

I have verizon fios so I have the regular router that comes with Fios (have to as I have the cable boxes as well). If I run the wire right from the Verizon router the speeds are fine, once I introduce the 615 is when the slow down occurs. And only on wired. I have my windows firewall off, and also my Comodo off as well, but even with it on, connected directly to my verizon doesn't have any issues.

This maybe due to having 2 routers on the same network, you maybe experiencing a double NAT issue here.

If you take that same laptop, and go direct into the Verizon router, do you get normal speeds? If no, can you try with a different computer? If yes...let me brainstorm and I will get back to you.

@Hard Harry.

Yes, as soon as soon as I plug it directly into the router (through a switch) the speed is back to normal.

Its the only on wired that is confusing me. You sure your connecting to the Dlink wireless, and not the Verizon wireless?

If your wireless is fast, then the WLAN to LAN is fine. Maybe try transferring a file from LAN to LAN with the internet connection disconnected from the DIR-615. Could be a issue with the integrated switch in the router.

Yes, I have the second router (The D-link) set up as an access point with a different SSID, the speed is fine. (~11mbps).

It seems I may just have to run another wire to my pc and one for my access point =/

I just tried transferring a 600mb file from my desktop to my laptop via ethernet wire through the Dlink router. (Internet disconnected and wireless off) and it transferred at ~11.2 MB / second. So it seems Lan to Lan speeds are fine.

That suggest its a configuration issue. If LAN to LAN is fine, that makes it unlikly its a issue at the switch. If wireless is fine, then general throughput to Verizon is fine. Stock and 3rd party firmware says its unlikely a firmware issue.

I don't know. I am stumped. I will keep pondering it..but it doesn't make sense. Maybe call Dlink? See if they have any thoughts? The only other thing I can offer is Teamviewer or turn on remote management see if there is anything I can see in the configuration that will smark a idea? Sorry. ::frown::
