UPnP not working well w/ large directories
« on: February 07, 2009, 02:24:05 PM »

Finally got my Xbox 360 to find my DNS-323 from a post in another thread...now I'm having issues with my large directories. One of the mid-size ones takes a full minute to list it's sub-folders, the larger one just gives up after a minute and says no files found.

I'm wondering why this is the case and if there's anything I can do to speed up it, other than praying this is addressed in the next firmware update.

One other workaround I thought of, but can't seem to do is mounting the volume on my Vista machine and then sharing it from there...however Vista doesn't give me the option to Share mounted network folders...any other programs that would let me workaround that??

Thanks for any guidance.

What do you mean by large?

I'm sharing a folder named "Movies" that is located in my volume_1 root
that folder contains over 200 folder and over 1000 files....

and the Xbox360 list all the folders inside the "Movies" pretty fast

I am experiencing a similar issue. My Movie directory contains over 200 files (no folders) and seems to give up on the 360 when trying to view files in this directory. All my other directories show the videos fine but they are sorted up into folders not containing as many files. The message given on the 360 is no videos found and also occurs when selecting the "all videos" folder. I am thinking about dividing up my Movie folder into folders A-D, E-G, etc.. but really it should be able to handle this without doing so. I know there are people having similar issues with the upnp file list not updating but I seem to be updating fine. Hopefully 1.07 will address alot of the overlooked kinks. This device has great potential but what good are new features if they aren't working correctly ..

Mine is serving up ~23,000 (116GB) MP3 files, ~2,300 (2GB) photos  and ~1,400 (149GB) videos, and it takes roughly 30-35 minutes to do a full UPnP refresh/index build and about 1.5-2hrs after the index rebuild for the DNS-323 to start broadcasting newly-added content.

When browsing over the Xbox 360, the movie/video folders are fairy quick, but the music and photos are a bit slower (more files/folders).

Just curious are your videos in a single folder or in multiple folders?

They're in multiple folders, but the subfolders don't go incredibly deep.  Probably about 5-6 folders deep for some of the T.V. shows.

Thanks for verifying. Mine works correctly in this manner as well. It is when one folder contains many files that it seems to time out (many files not sorted into folders) Would be nice if anyone has some insight into this. not to stray from the post topic but I notice the wishlist sticky is still locked. I wounder if it would be a good idea to create 2 wishlists. One for new features or enhancements another for fixes to bugs that currently exist...

Just thought I'd post again in here in case this info helps anyone else out. Turns out one of the file names in my directory had an "&" symbol in it which the 360 didn't like and thats why I was getting the "no videos" message. I think someone may have mentioned that it doesn't like special charachters already but I didn't clue in until now
