DIR-615, Ver E3 -- Wireless N not working
« on: October 17, 2011, 03:44:18 PM »

I have Ver E3, with firmware 5.10.  Like it says above, Wireless N is not working.  I've already going into Manual Wireless set up and selected Mixed G and N.  All of my devices will connect, but only as G devices.
I'm reluctant to set it to "N only" for fear that none of my devices will be able to connect.

Is this a known problem?

How do I fix it?

Do your devices support N modes? If they don't then, you'll only connect at N mode.

I'm having the same problem. I've tried mixed g and n, mixed b and g and n, and n only. My devices will show up in "802.11n" mode for a little bit in the Wireless>Status tab, but will frequently drop down again to g or b depending on the distance from the router. Even on "802.11n only," the modes will drop to "802.11b" or "802.11g." This is really starting to bother me because all of my devices are wireless N capable but the router won't just allow them to use only 802.11n. I mean, that was the entire reason i bought a wireless N router; to get greater range and faster speeds. Please if anyone can solve this problem it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Jacob

How far away is the router from devices. Does it do the same thing on single mode G?
What security modes are you using? WPA2 and Auto Cipher is preferred.
Are they any other WiFi routers in the near by area?
Any house cordless phones?

The one device connected currently is about 30ft away from the router.
I am using WPA2 only and AES Cipher.
There are no other WiFi routers near.
There are cordless house phones that say they are running on 2.4Ghz

Thank You for such a quick reply  :)

Well 30ft way is kinda far. I would try Single mode G as a test and see how it goes.
Your cordless phones running on 2.4Ghz will impact the router when they are in use.

30ft shouldn't be that far away for N though should it? I'm reading on wikipedia that the maxium indoor distance for N is about 230ft so I'm not even close to that. When i put it on G only, 2 devices dropped to B and one stayed at G. Also I tried going down to the hall to where my bluray player is (about 70ft) where I used to get about 2mbps, I now get no signal at all. Would changing the Wireless channel change whether or not I get interference from the cordless phones?

Well 230ft is probably line of sight and with testing with out any building materials such and walls and doors in the way. So depending on your building and materials, these will impact the distances. If your on single mode G on the router, device shouldn't fall back to B as B mode isn't being broadcast. They should connect at 54mb or they wont connect at all if they don't support G or theres too much interference.

I presume that you need to run both G and N modes to support your devices correct?

Yeah but for whatever reason, even when im brodcasting either only N mode or only G mode, if the device is far away, it will drop down to G or B. It doesn't make sense. Yes I believe that I need to run both but also when i switched it to only N mode and put what i thought was a G device (my phone: Samsung Galaxy S for AT&T) it showed up that it was using N. So I am very confused.

Ya this seems odd. Well I guess maybe the Samsung supports N and if so, go with Single N mode and see how things work out. I have seen use users with some odd behavior with newer phones over the past couple of years.

OK, I tried it again on N only and it still dropped down to g, and b when i went far enough away. Could there be some other settings that aren't correct that could be causing this?

If the router is broadcasting N only, the devices should not be dropping to G or B, they could just disconnect. You sure you are connecting to a different wireless router by chance?

Wonder if we should have someone review your router setting with you using teamviewer.com.
