DNS 323 - Mount Harddrive on WAN
« on: October 17, 2011, 07:43:28 PM »

This is my first post.
I bought a DNS 323 a while back, I have successfully mounted drives on my internal network. My goal is to connect to the drive externally. I have also set up a... I know it's a SSH server, but I think Dlink calls it SFTP. (I can connect to the SFTP from outside my home).

I have several programs that I set the default directory to one of my network drives. I would like to be able to take my laptop out and just save the file no matter where I am at. Currently when I am not home, I have to save the file to my desktop and upload it using filezilla.

Please help me with getting connected.

Thanks
Ron

This thread was originally posted in the "Everybody's D-Link" board and was moved to the "DNS-323" board.

Are you talking about SFTP or FTPS?  SFTP is NOT FTP at all - it is an implementation of SSH which is not supported the DNS-323 using stock firmware. FTPS is supported.

SSH can be implemented on the unit if you hack it using fun_plug, but that is outside the scope of this forum.  (There are other forums that are dedicated to fun_plug - see: http://wiki.dns323.info/)

As for what you are trying to accomplish, it is possible to do using SSH and port forwarding, or using VPN.

I might be wrong, I was using Filezilla to connect, I set it up as a SSH connection and it connected. This is a stock DNS 323 with the latest Dlink firmware upgrade. I have read a little from http://wiki.dns323.info.

I have never set up a VPN connection, it would be nice to have this instead.

What I am trying to accomplish is to have to PC share the same network drive. One PC would be on my LAN the other would be outside my LAN. If you know of any good tutorials on setting up a VPN, please let me know. My router is a Linksys WRT54GS2
