Another 'losing internet connection' thread
« on: October 25, 2011, 04:04:09 PM »

I bought a DIR-655 about 8 months ago. I had no problems connecting to the internet for the first couple of months. Then I would get a random connection problem where I would reset my modem or the router and all would be fine for a while. Then about a month and a half ago it started getting worse and worse and about 3 weeks ago it got to a point that I was resetting the router or modem daily to get a initial connection to the internet. And that would last until the next day when we would try to access the internet. Ocassionally, if I had a good initial connection, I would get a random loss of the connections a minute or two after I started surfing the web. Initially a modem or router reset would clear this up too. This happening both over wireless and through the hard wired connection. So it doesn't matter how I am using the Router. AND, most recently resets may not even get me a solid connection to the internet. So, I have bypassed the router for now.
The router was set up with changes to only passwords, network name, a changed router IP address and not broadcasting the wireless it has worked fine. After the reset, I left the router IP address as the default but changed the above security settings. Nothing else was changed.
I have never had any issues logging into the router menus through the default or my defined IP addresses.

In doing some troubleshooting, I performed a reset on the modem several times, none of which resolved the problem, I was still losing the connection. Then I bypassed the router and did a direct connection to the modem and all is good and I have not had a connection issue since. I even tried changing the Ethernet connection on the back of the home computer to a different computer port but that changed nothing. I am currently trying a different cable.
I am using the standard connection scheme:
Cable from outside to modem, modem to router via Ethernet into the proper router port, Router to static computer via Ethernet. And a laptop accesses through the wireless. All cables have been working fine and are home built CAT 5e cables

It is really frustrating and I am not sure where to start now. Currently, I am running without the router for internet but I need it for the wireless to a laptop in another room.

I use Time Warner Cable and have a Atlantic Scientific DPC2100 cable modem.

The DIR 655 specs are as follows:
P/N - BIR655ANA.B1
Firmware - 2.00NA
Internet connection is a dynamic IP
Computer OS is Win 7 for both computers.

So, any suggestions would be greatly helpful.

Thanks,
Mike

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router not one the devices.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Wow, bunch of stuff to look into. I will work on that.
Also, I tried a new cable and it worked fine for 2 days but then started doing the same old crap.

Here are the answers to some of the questions.
Wireless mode - WPA2 only
802.11 mode is mixed already
Security -  WPA-personal
Cipher type  - TPIK and AES
The only wireless device connected is a brand new Toshiba laptop
Yes, we have cordless phones in the house but they have been in here the whole time the router has been working and not working.
As for other WIFI routers, I will have to see what is out there but I think there were at least 2-3 when I did a scan on my other laptop.

Thanks for the help and I will let you know what changes if anything with your recommended settings.

Thanks again for the help. Here is what I did:

Turn off QoS options. - This was already off
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual. - This was already off
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. - This was already on
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router not one the devices. - Both PCs were in the dynamic DHCP but I added them to the reservation list.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. - Changed to these settings
Changed from Mixed to Single mode G or N or mixed G and N only. - I changed to mixed G and N
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? OK, the primary and secondary IP addresses show 0.0.0.0 for both fields.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. - I am assuming that this is a normal setting but I cannot find it.

So we will see how things work with the above changes. (keeping my fingers crossed) but I have a feeling the DNS IP addresses of 0.0.0.0 might be an issue and I need to figure out how to obtain them. BUT, with my ISP, the connection is a Dynamic IP (DHCP)

You'll find DNS addresses under Status/Device Info/Wan Section, look for Primary and 2ndary.
